on today's episode of... "what the fuck is going on!?"

no, seriously. half the time, you're like, "i know this guy!", and then the next, you're like, "i know this guy... (?)", but quieter. at least, we know where the manga is headed, but by vlad, it's like author-san doesn't have any idea how to get there. add in the not-so-stellar-but-acceptable art (considering how old it is; but then again there's *sanctuary*), conflicted (and not the good kind) characters and pacing that's all but assured to screw your sanity, then you have your basic, dime-a-dozen shonen (?) manga. good to read of you just want to pass the time, bad to read if you want to enjoy your time.

I have mixed feeling about this manga. I read it long time ago, but I didn't write the review, so here is my review:

The beginning is so entertaining. The art is superb in its period, but the story gets so confusing in the middle (till the end) because there's too many casts and somehow because mangaka wants to focus on ecchi side, so they put lots of "forced" storyline to add up the ecchi-ness.

I stop bothering to remember their names because I know the character will be gone in the next chapter and reappear during the ending just like Easter Eggs. Mangaka wants to make reader feels :"Oh hey! That dude! I know him, but I just can't remember his name. And what did he do again?" I won't reread it again just to find that dude's name or what he does in this manga.

I kinda like the ending, though it's not a real happy ending, but I still like it. Honestly, if the manga is shorter (4-5 volumes), cut the unnecessary craps, this manga will be great!

Still recommended it, because it's not that long.

Okay manga

This manga is, in my opinion, really catchy in the beginning. It dragged me in with the action and a little history lesson, but mostly it caught my attention because of the artwork. After around volume 4, I find that there was really no point to it anymore. Too much talking and explaining, most of the time the explanation about the legends' past is extremely confusing. Some characters are not even necessary, such as Beniguma and the other characters at the beginning. Artwork got old really fast.

The ending was fantastic though. The loss of the two most important characters really is a tragic loss but you find it somewhat happy because they still won in the end, and they died fighting. I like the fact that towards the ending, we see Misao's dragon guarding Ishigami's sword deep deep under water. Almost like a message that says, "You're dead, I'm stuck as a dragon, but we'll always be together."

Trash

Everything about it is bad, the art, the fights, the story (which only barely makes sense), the characters, the forced attempts at "cool" lines and poses, the bad attitudes... "Trash" is the best word to describe this manga.

Very Entertaining

It was definitely very entertaining to read a manga that was focused on fighting beasts of the old and showing that with pure will and determination, there is nothing you can't do.

The start of this manga was very slow, hard to understand and had enough Japanese terminology to make you dizzy. But after Volume 1, it picks up pretty quickly to trun out into a great story with great action and awesome characters. The story gets easier to understand as well because each characters have there own references to the story and the ending was definitely a good one and one of the strongest points in the manga.

It won't bore anyone too much if your into deep stories, so I suggest to anyone to give it a shot.

Plus:
Awesome action, good art, cool monsters

Minus:
Too many characters and names too keep track of, and it's hard to keep track of them because, as alexxeno mentioned, the character introductions are so brief, you tend to forget about some of them. They'll briefly introduce a character in one volume and then he'll disappear, and then a couple volumes later he'll show up again with some important role, and you think, "wait... who is that again?" Also, because there are so many characters, and only seven volumes, you don't really feel that you get to "know" any of them, they're just part of the story. And the story itself isn't that easy to keep track of either, because there is A LOT of Japanese terminology, like the names of people, places, weapons, events, clans, demons, and so much more, which makes it even harder to keep track of all the characters because you have to try to memorize all these names. Aside from that, I also didn't really care for the ending, which I won't say much about.

The art is really pretty, but the story is way too confusing and it tends to jump all over the place. I wouldn't waist your money buying the books. It's been completely scanlated, so just read it online/download it.

The worst thing I find about this manga is the speed, they 'waste' little time on actually character introductions or time explaining and great changes to characters.

It's pretty good, but the story is a little inconsistent. Sometimes i wonder wtf happened between the volumes...
I still wished someone picked this up though, so close to finish scanlating this manga but still so far away...

I've read the first 4 volumes. The artwork is great but I don't like how some of the beasts look...some of them actually look too real. The story is a bit generic and confusing. The fight scenes are cool though. I'm not gonna give it a rating yet cause I really don't know what to think of it beyond just saying that I like it so far. I may buy the books from Tokyopop.
