Description
While vacationing on the moon, Albert, a young Parisian nobleman, meets the Count of Monte Cristo, a fabulously rich aristocrat from the far reaches of the galaxy. Fascinated by the Count's sophistication and intelligence, Albert is unaware of the older man's dark purpose: to enact revenge for a terrible act of betrayal committed against him 25 years ago. Soon, all of Paris, including Albert's own mother and father, will feel the terror of the Count's vengeance.

I've never read TCMC, nor have I seen an adaptation. With a limited knowledge and Wiki's plot summary of the book, I started reading it. Now, you don't need the PS, but I wanted to compare details. And it's mostly all there in a sci-fi/19th century France blend.
I liked it a lot. Which is both good and bad (-edit- The complete story isn't in the manga). I found out that it was based on an anime (not the preferred other way around) and while I've grown pretty sick of anime these past years, I'm going to check it out. The premise is interesting enough to want to watch this anime-adaptation instead of, let's say, the movie (with JC) that came out a few years ago. And TCMC seems to be a good story on its own, but Gankutsuou has supernatural elements to it, which I always love.
So I gave it a six. But only because it stops short. If it was meant as a teaser to the anime, it worked like a charm.
