Description

High school student Kou leaves his grandparents' house in Tokyo and returns to his home town, Yamami village. A childhood incident has left Kou with a crippling fear of fire, but in Yamami he meets a "Sorcerer’s Apprentice" who changes his attitude towards fire forever.

A coming-of-age story revolving around two boys who dream of becoming pyrotechnicians.

Imagine Fireworks as a Sort of Sports Manga

...Is what I'm going to essentially tell you this manga's all about. Friendship? Check. Competition between rivals? Check. Tournaments? Check. Hype? Check. However, I don't think describing this manga as "shoujo" or "shounen" is really quite fair to it - rather than having one of those two standards at its core, it blends together tropes and themes and storytelling elements of both to form what really is at its heart a manga about just how awesome fireworks are. Even this early on in the scanlations, there's already enough indication of the way the characters will grow and bond more, and how the story will take on with them from there.

The art is also fantastic - the lines are beautiful and clean, and the backgrounds are done nicely. The artist also painstakingly depicts all of the different fireworks used (and who would've known there were so many different types?) to really give the reader a sense of how beautiful they are.

The plot was really standard shoujo manga, but fortunately the theme and storytelling saved this manga for being mediocre and forgettable. I really glad the two main character is male, so the mangaka didn't need to insert unnecessary romantic plot in the story, and they can focused it more on drama side. It's good since the main theme is about pyrotechnicism, and this manga really explain the technical matter, altough not too deep.

The artwork also became plus point in this manga. It's clean and beautiful (it's from no.6 mangaka though, of course the artwork was so good). The interaction between characters, especially kou and ginga also cute and not too overdramatic. Overall this is really nice and sweet manga, i recommended it.

But it seems the scanlation was discontinued, huh (i read it from official publishing edition in my country, so it doesn't matter for me. A really unfortunate for people who already liked it from scanlation but can't continue it)
