Passing time

Another story about people passing time in Ashinano's signature vast, empty worlds. This time focused around prop planes, it shares a lot of themes and imagery with YKK, so if you're into that, you'll enjoy this one. This series has an even bigger sense of derealization than YKK, especially in the last few chapters. High recommend.

Comfy SoL but be warned...

This one is virtually identical to Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou: a laid-back slice-of-life set in a quirky alternate future of some sort, similar to our own world but just ever so slightly skewed in a way. There isn't a big deal made about it; it's simply the backdrop for our adventure, not that this is an adventure manga. They are simply down-to-earth tales of being up in the sky, lazily putting along in the air. The characters are simple but adequate. They don't really need to be fleshed out to achieve the manga's purpose: a comfortable getaway.

There is one caveat:

An astoundingly undercooked attempt at mindfuckery, specifically of the "what is real life and what is just fantasy" kind, rears it's boring, fangless head in the last couple volumes. I'll tell you now that, while it did affect my enjoyment of the work, it's something you can safely ignore when it pops up. It does not have much bearing on anything else, you don't need to start going back and wondering about it. With this forewarning, you can put aside the lame developments and enjoy the relaxing SoL it was before and more or less is until the end.

I guess the breaks between the chapters were too long for me to follow the story closely... I didn't get what happened at the end. Could somebody please explain the ending to me? And what about the fucked-up dimensions? Whaaaa I don't get it!

There were a lot of unexplained things in ykk, too. But there, these things just didn't bother. KNI on the other hand, just leaves you (me) with the feeling that you missed some important bits of the story and nothing really adds up.

Another artistic work of Ashinano

This is absolutely fantastic story, art and manga. If it's not as good as YKK, the treatment of topic concepts like freedom and work is really good. The poetic language share many common features and symbols with all his other works, included Position and Kumabashi no Koto. Surely all the works of Ashinano is a must read. The guy has accomplished to make of manga an art comparable to poetry or painting.

This one isn't as good as ASHINANO Hitoshi's mainstay YKK, but it still deserves to be praised as at least very close to master level.

The knowledge about planes and aviation is real, and further implementation of slightly fantastic sci fi (if you can call it science fiction, since a caravan of transport planes is quite possible, but just not done) adds the typical ASHINANO Hitoshi mystic to the whole thing. I'd just hope that the chapters came more frequently... 😀
Well, the time invested just improves it all. I hope.

Great after YKK

I've heard that Ashinano really loves planes, and he spent his youth studying to go into business with them. That can be seen somewhat in YKK, but it really shows in Kabu no Isaki. Personally, I'm not much for planes at all, but Kabu no Isaki was so beautiful I had to change my opinion at least for the short amount of time I was in this strange timeless version of the modern world.

...it has a nice "every-day-life" kind of feel to it. Add to that the knowledge that it is set in an alternate future (If there is such a thing) and it's a very good one-shot to sit back with and forget about the real world around you.
