Description

Mitsui’s life has been thoroughly torn apart. And just when he is confronted with the reality that is his life, he runs into his old classmate and former friend Sone. Although years have gone by since their schooldays together, neither one has been able to forget their past: Mitsui rejected Sone for being gay.

Now that they have reconnected, Mitsui’s only interest is to shame and continue to reject Sone for his identity. But is Mitsui merely projecting…? With complex emotions and a twisted past, Mitsui may also be a victim of his circumstances.

compelling, despite the violence

I definitely agree with Ah_Cat in that we needed way more from Sone's perspective in order to make this a more complete tale. An extra chapter, anything from him. I also cannot see what Sone sees in Mitsui except for a clearly broken man who takes his insecurities out on others. This, to me, is not a recipe for romance, so the missing piece is bothering me. Even though it's very clear that Sone loves Mitsui, I really wanted to see how he got there.

I REALLY wanted to hate Mitsui. Everything he did was horrendous and unforgivable. I was appalled. But here is where this mangaka shines, there is just something about the way Mitsui's character is constructed where you see just how pathetic he is, even as he does terrible things to Sone. You see just how bound and repressed he is in other settings while there is something refreshing about seeing him go wild when he is with Sone, despite the damage it does to both characters. He was also very clearly wanting Sone to protest, to cut himself loose, to reject Mitsui entirely, and is at a loss when he stays. Sone sees right through Mitsui's acts and sees him for who he really is, but again, that missing piece is how he came to love the man.

The redemption was very fast and very simple, but it gutted me. I felt all the regret and sadness and pain in that single panel (it made me cry).

Recommended for angst lovers like me!

Confused of my own feelings

I don't know if I like this manga or not. There was so much angst and cruelty that I really don't know how Sone could stand it. All in all, it's not like he totally couldn't leave, I guess he must have loved Mitsui all this time.

We got a good close up of Mitsui character and past, so I can understand his actions out of denial. Not like I could experience it, but It's not that uncommon to not accept your own sexual desires, especially when you grow up in up-tight and "oh-so-proper" environment, so I think his frustration, angst and helplessness were portrayed very well. Especially the scene where he asks himself if he was always such a cruel person. But I want more of Sone's feelings. I get it that mangaka made it as if we only see what Mitsui sees, so if Sone doesn't speak about his feelings, we wouldn't know, but it leaves me with so much unresolved feelings. I wish she showed more of him, since I would like to know what kind of man could whistain this kind of abuse and still keep on loving Mitsui. He doesn't seem as the carefree type, on the contrary, I guess he understands how hurt Mitsui really is so he tries his best. That's why the fight scene is just right in time. He couldn't stand it, yet when he cooled of he came back. Sone so mature~

Well, after writing all of this I guess I really like this manga after all. It's just the topic it's dealing with is so realistic and presented in a way that you just feel so sorry for both of them, that it's a bit confusing. Mangaka really thought it through.

Despite the abuse, they didn't just "forget it and happily moved on". The scene with Mitsuki kissing Sones scars really made me tear up. All the scenes needed to forgive Mistui were there and they gave a huge impact. Definitely recommended, just not for the ones with weak heart.

Oh wow that surely was.. unexpected. In a positive way. This is such an unpleasant story and the characters are depressingly broken, but the execution is so impressively mature and persuasive with its exploration of the human mind and how its psychology works. It went beyond the common shallow approach, for which I have to give a round of applause. And the sketchy art style is a perfect match; it fits the moody atmosphere like a glove and brings out all the best that the story has to offer. Very good stuff indeed.
