It's good, but...

Let me start by saying that i've also read Dagashi Kashi, and i think call of the night is an improvement in terms of both the visual narrative and narrative structure.

Now for the elephant in the room: the ending. The compromise reached at the end was seen a long time coming; it was either that, or straight up never seeing one another again. And it was quite evident that the 'bad end' (turning into a complete vampire) wasn't going to happen.

I can understand some people thinking that this was more like the 'end of an arc' instead of the manga as a whole. We don't know if there will be a timeskip sequel, spin-off or something of the sort. But for now i'll assume it's a done deal: I still think it was successful in what it tried to do: a coming of age story; with enough imagination, the readers can imagine how their relationship pans out in the future (surely not as a typical vampire relation, but that's what made it charming in the first place, right?)

That being said, i don't know if i could recommend his future works. It might be a pretentious, even unfair critique, especially considering how a lot of manga have been drawn out to hell (modern example being kanojo rental) but it's still something of a weak point in my opinion. For what it's worth, in these scenarios it feels like *less* is more, and something that would greatly benefit his storytelling is cutting down on some of the fluff (just some, not all).

Still, being under 200 chapters (around 5 years runtime, give or take?) is still what i consider reasonable, so this gets an okay recommendation from me. We'll see for his next work, maybe i'll just be trapped by his excellent character design once again, who knows.

Good ending

I liked the ending. It was a coming of age story about a young boy and his first life. It followed a similar structure to the hero’s journey, which I liked. The ending made sense to me somehow. I doubt a simplistic asspull would have satisfied me. I am appreciative of the fact that the mangaka did not treat me like a child.

Great Manga, Massively Disappointing Ending

Would be 10/10 if not for the ending. The last few chapters has Kou and Nazuna confirming the feelings for each other, with Nazuna bitterly leaving because she can't bring herself to suck Kou's blood which could turn him into a Vampire as well as turn her fully human and possibly kill her.

After that Kou begins to age as some vampire/human hybrid in the aftermath of Nazuna's departure only to eventually find Nazuna in some out of the way place where their reunion isn't what you call heartwarming but tepid at best. And at the very end the people Nazuna's staying with asks her who Kou is, with her responding the man she loves from an overhead view and it ends there.

The worst part of the ending is there are no vampire babies, no wedding or wedding like scenario for the two. It just ends after that.

A bit disappointed

It started off really refreshing. I was kind of hoping that it would maintain the episodic, slice-of-life and subtle storytelling style that makes you feel, paradoxically, lonely and heartwarming at the same time. The magic got lost after it became a larger story about vampires, and devolved into a typical Shounen. It *is* still a decent Shounen, but I was really hoping it would be something much more magical.

Braindead characters in an unrealistic setting
by panos
December 25th, 2021, 11:16am
Rating: 4.0  / 10.0
The so-called secrecy of the vampire species in a modern society passes as unrealistic as it gets.
In particular there are repeated instances of vampires openly admitting so with no qualms whatsoever. It beats the whole point of a secret society in that sense with any implications involved.
Which makes you wonder why hasn't the goverment or a big organisation has taken any action regarding them? Howcome the general public is not aware regarding their existence? They don't even try to hide it...
Furthermore, mc is literally strolling around in the middle of the night, his mom hasn't got a clue, the school hasn't notified regarding his abscence (he seems to be missing for a month at least) in a modern Japan.
So the setting as a whole falls flat.
The mc is brain dead as well. Many vampires pop out of the blue, are curious about him and immediately start asking him personal questions. I dislike this goody two-shoes personality of his altogether. I don't know which is more annoying tbh. The nosey side characters or the mc immediately honestly answering without questioning their intents beforehand.

Slow & Fun

The story is very slice of life feeling and its also pretty slow. I would skip chapters a lot because I felt like nothing was going on, but every time I picked up a chapter and read it all the way through, I would smile & giggle. Their love story is very cute, endearing, and the right kind of akward. The leads are learning about themselves and learning about love.

(Its not my cup of tea, so I eventually dropped it. But, I had real fun reading it & can understand anybody else loving/liking it.)

An objectively better love story than twilight

Yofukashi no uta is a manga wherein both the main characters try and find out how to fall in love whilst finding out who was the Fmc before she became a vampire
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
or if she was human at all

It's a good read and would highly recommend it to someone who wants to read a vampire love story without too much drama and too much love rivalry (unlike twilight)
