Description

Light has obtained a bogus skill known as “Fruitmaster”, a skill that specializes in the cultivation of fruits. Weighed down by the vast difference between him and his childhood friend who became an S-Rank adventurer, he spends his days working the farm and practicing his swordsmanship. However, one day, he accidentally eats a second skill fruit, which normally results in death…but not only does he miraculously survive, he discovers that his bogus skill actually contains a secret ability!

I picked up this series since I saw that vol5 had a cute twinbraid girl on it (bad idea, i know) and unfortunately the entire first section of the work effectively gave me a slow and painful lobotomy. The protagonist is meant to be written as some kind of lackadaisical forward-looking dude, but he comes of as kind of brain-damaged instead. Needless to say the work is far better when he's not around at all.

I'm not particularly fond of the world's skill system since it mostly just exists to restrict characters (esp villains) to a very small moveset in an effort to make it easier to understand and reason about without having to develop any kind of meaningful backstory to how they got that skill/knowledge. Actually it's kind of similar to "one piece" where basically everybody similarly has "a single ability gotten from a {macguffin}", although I also have minor complaints about how most fights pan out there as well. I'm not sure budget-fantasy-one-piece's combat could ever live up to a fraction of the original but if you're into that then maybe there's some merit for you in there. The protagonist conveniently having an accompanying loli that got the exact skill to loredump everything for him is also kind of cringe though.

I'd say the main highlight of the work is that the "main heroine" actually has agency and a full plotline dedicated to her later on in the story and isn't just a damsel in distress for the protagonist to save, which is more than I can say for a lot of shounen. She's fairly similar to Ais from danmachi in a lot of ways honestly. Basically none of these power-fantasy shounens ever let the women do anything of value yet she gets a full kino arc to herself.

As I mentioned earlier I only really read this for vol5, and vol5 came through with tons of good panels of hanaboushi (lmao at her name tho) so i'm content. Her hat is dumb and her name is dumb but she's good. Vol5+6 are pretty good volumes overall and probably the highlight of the work for me. When the protagonist came back in ch24 I immediately almost wanted to stop reading honestly.

I glanced at the existing fanTL a bit; unfortunately it's extremely bad and somehow makes it even worse than the original jp which is impressive. I'm almost tempted to make a quick scanlation of my own just so that the only option isn't the current terrible one.

It's like a 6-7/10 for vol5/6 and a 1-2/10 for everything else.

Rushed, Poorly Paced, Jump Wannabe

The premise is interesting, but the execution is lacking. It structures itself like a Shonen Jump story, but that structure doesn't match the plot, so things end up rushed and nonsensical as it hits the story to fight beats.

The art can, at times, be very pretty. But that's the best thing this story has going for it.

With that said, the reviewer below me is smoking something strong if they think manga as a whole is worse than manhwa. I can say the same things he said about manga about manhwa, because both are littered with subpar trash that need to be sorted through. All mediums are like this.

After having read a great deal of Manhwa, it's now apparent how cringe and awful Manga is. It's... I can't go back anymore.

This manga is a great example of Manga and where it stands today. More or less where it stood a decade ago.

Clueless male lead. Doing the "good thing!" for the "right reasons!" and looking very sad in the doing of it. On top of that, there's a lot of silly Deus Ex Machina.

I'm sorry... manga just can't compete anymore. Time to hang it up or innovate.
