don't read for the romance, read for the comedy

I hesitate to call this genius, but it's GENIUS. I was confused going into it after seeing the writer was a comedian with no other manga to his credits and I was plenty familiar with the artist's previous slow-burn slice of life romance work. Reading the first few chapters I saw it as one of these straight romance stories, albeit with a harsher twist on the usual tsundere FL. What I got was an almost meta joke playing on the typical shounen romance story structure. Our heroine Yamada is comically cruel to her target Hoshino, our happy-go-lucky protagonist, trusting to a fault. She can't help herself around somebody so affably trickable, so ready and willing to fall for the most outlandish lies. Not a good formula for a heart fluttery romance story, but that isn't what this is.

Chapters play out in typical romcom fashion, setting up heartwarming moment after heartwarming moment. Our vicious FL intrudes on Ojiro's masterful mise-en-scene, infecting each page with her presence. You sit there waiting for the moment where she turns towards the camera to hide a blush, offering the reader some sort of glance at the dere dere heart of a pure maiden stowed away behind her iron wall front. Maybe this time his kindness will break through and she'll give the reader SOME sort of assurance that her intentions are of love, her teases coming from a misguided attempt to interact with the object of her affection. But it never comes.

Instead you get punchline after punchline after punchline, deflating any romantic tension like a needle to an overinflated balloon. Because this ISN'T a romance story. Or at least, not primarily. This is a comedy story about a stone faced tsukkomi walking her boke nose first into a wall over and over and over again for her own amusement. The previous review compares it to Teasing Master Takagi-san, but you'd be off to expect that. Think more Billy and Mandy or Ren and Stimpy. It makes you feel like a moron for expecting the two to share a lovely moment watching the fireworks together or a climactic moment of mutual understanding. And in the end the way this experience is reflected in the protag's own personal arc is nothing less than genius. It's not a story of a pubescent teen boy and a cold mystery girl finding true love. It's about a comedy duo finding their partners in crime. It's about a young man discovering what it's like to get played. As it turns out, it can be pretty funny. Grasp for comparisons all you want but it'll be tough finding another manga like this.

Im surprised by how awful this is

They are trying to be kike the teasing manga where the girl teases the boy, but they turned it to the highest degree. Making mc sit outside to sve a spot for 7 days straaight, only to not see fireworks. Told everyone in your class that you were confessed by mc, who only confessed to you as he liked you and felt that he needed to tell you as you had told him you were moving away the day after (which in fact was false)

She does alot of bitchy things.

Lastly, the ending i was actually pretty happy with

fuck that bitch, mc, treat yourself, sure all tbe girls are boring, but there is a saying in which you can learn to love someone. Also, i am so happy he did not date her, mc treat yourself better, you deserve so much more than this bitch

Overall i do not recommend reading it unless you like feeling infuriated
