Wasted Potential

Man this manga started off so great. The chemistry between Haru and Rikuo was excellent. The convenient store atmosphere was great and it really felt like a well done seinen romance manga. Which is rare. Unfortunately, about half way through it devolves into a shoujo disguised as seinen. The characters don't really get any romantic maturity and Rikuo, seems to get dumber. As the manga progresses the reader is suddenly starved of the magic that made it great at the start: The amazing chemistry between the characters. Haru and Rikuo suddenly stop developing their friendship/romance. Kinoshita (who was a great character) gets abandoned. Rikuo's calm collected and laid back personality gets swapped for basically the male equivalent of Shinako: A worriome, overly-serious, bore. The author tears down the established connection between Rikuo and Haru instead of slowly building it up. This makes the ending feel even more abrupt and rushed. The reader doesn't really get the closure and resolution they deserve.

Drawn real life?

I've finished "Sing "Yesterday" to me"..
Its name is still melancholic, and I've not gotten a solid understanding of its meaning now with the context of what the story behind the title is. My interpretation of its meaning is: "If only I was smarter yesterday things would've gone the way they were destined for much sooner.". That is a theme throughout the whole manga I'd say. The sad note in that is that had stuff been realized sooner, the destined journey would've been started that much sooner and with that the travelers would have that much more time to cover more distance on their path in the limited lifetime. But but it's really fine, it was a lot of time, but not too much. The beginning of the journey was delayed by only some 3 years for the.. Main plot.

As always, I got new fictional characters I like, which is great for me without basically any real life friend(s).

Haru Nonaka!
The treasure of this story for me.

The story is realistic for me. Additionally, it is especially realistic because of how realistic the developments in particular are. They are slow, both in the sense of how slow the story feeds us itself and in the sense of the time that passes in the story for developments to occur. I would have thoughts, as I was thinking about the story when I was not reading it, how what I was reading is like drawn real life.. It's like.. I wondered how many people would like to read that, I pondered that those who are not happy with life themself, regarding a romantic relationship or interest by itself, are more likely to like this story than those who don't check that box. I had the thought that I could be reading something a lot more "fun"; Eventful, not just a fictional real life. Well anyways I'm trying to explain the way in which I find this story to be realistic and thus it checking a particular check box of realism in story telling. As the ending of the story was nearing, I had it in my mind, I wondered what the result of it all will be. It's great! Very satisfactory! It is overall quite a dramaless story but it ends so nicely!! Very lovely and very maturely, no one is left forgotten by the story, everyone gets a healthy conclusion. Primarly. Ugh. how do I say this without it being spoiler.. Unlike with Nisekoi in which I was rooting for.. Ah nevermind this would be spoilers for Nisekoi. Well "best girl" wins!!! And no one is sad as the result!! She "wins" in such a mature way, as I've said, no character is left unconcluded or concluded on a sad note.. The authoress neatly wrapped it all up. Nothing happened just for it to happene because it's nice or something, nothing is patched up just to yield the wanted result even though it would leave you with questions in your mind; The dialogue of the characters resolves everything; Nothing feels wrong or less than concluded in a manner that signifies everyone maturing.

The manga and the anime are substantially different. In the later half by a lot. Whole characters and thus their side plots, which all contribute to the main plot in a remarkable way, are missing from the anime. The very delivery of the ending in the anime is also substantially different for one big reason which I can't go into without making spoilers. But but, it's still lovely, the anime and it does end just like the manga, when all's put into its final place! It's likely to feel a bit rushed I think, not sure because I knew "everything" as I was reading the manga and then watching an episode of the anime covering the chapters I'd just read so no knowledgr was missing for me when I watched the anime.

The anime is lovely for its music and sound design because it ties with what I've mentioned about about the story itself; The story being quite realistic I mean. Music isn't spammed, it's only played at certain times. At all other times, there's no music, just the regular sounds of daily life, or wind.. It's also what made me think to myself how the story is quite mundane, not what fiction is likely more often than not used for. The voice acting is also splendid! I like the fact that I don't remember ever having heard Rikuo's voice actor anywhere else, it helps make the character special. But anyways, Haru's, Shinako's and Rikuo's voice acting is lovely.
Also, regarding the anime, the first 5 or so endings are phenomenal. Each is dedicated to a single character with items we know are their laying on a surface as the lovely song goes. Haru's ending with the ripped cinema ticked touched me sweetly and gave me a dose of that suffocating feeling.

As I've finished the story it's been on my mind. Usually I feel sad when I finish a story because it's the end of my window into the lives of characters I like/live. With this story that feeling is almost entirely lacking in presence. I'm satisfied with how it ends and the only sad thing is that I'll probably never have what the characters in the story have.

I can’t believe...

Hard to believe people call this realistic. In real life, people usually know when enough is enough. In real life, it’s too painful to stay friends with someone you have no chance with. In real life, eventually we come to a point where it’s time to cut our losses and we move on. If your working at a convenience store part time only 4 days a week with absolutely zero ambition in life, your not gonna have much of a chance with a college educated woman with goals in her life. At least go back to school and finish up so next time you see your lifelong crush you won’t be a total loser. This manga isn’t realistic or interesting and has a rather disappointing ending.

I'm not sure why I was so enamored with Toume Kei back in the day. Maybe it was due to the art? Because that's the only thing this series has going for it. Yesterday wo Utatte is atrociously paced, has no plot and you can't even call it a slice of life because nothing actually happens (and even in the slowest SoLs stuff actually happens). This is a pure romance manga, except that there is never any progress made because every character has unrequited love for someone else. Not only that but all of these characters refuse to ever move on and find someone else to fall for.

Such a setup would make sense if this was a generic shounen romcom, but this is a seinen starring characters who are aged 18~24+. The result is that you have this super realistic setting superimposed on top of adult aged characters who act like middle school children. Scratch that, I shouldn't even compare them to school children because even kids know when the fuck to move on with life and that a crush turning you down isn't the end of the world. The characters in this manga aren't even human because they fail at such a basic aspect of human life. No matter how many monologues and flashbacks you throw at me over 11 volumes, it still isn't going to make your unrequited love plot device any less boring.

What you read in the first 3 chapters of this manga is exactly what you'll get for the 110 other chapters.

The ending and my thoughts

Ok so i found the raw, read it for the ending only. I don't know Japanese so i'm not sure at the end. Read the spoiler at your own choice.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Shinako and Rikuo Uozumi try to maintain the relationship but it's not working out. They try to kiss, but fail to since Uozumi realizes Shinako has been pushing herself to the relationship, they are not comfortable confronting both themselves to problems that they are hiding. Both of them are concerned of Rou/Haru but won't tell each other about it. They then decide to break up.

Rikuo and the guy chasing after Haru come to Haru's hometown to find her. She is found at the train station by the other guy. She told him something, which reminds him about his childhood friend. He leaves. Rikuo then arrives the station, have some talks with Haru. Rikuo kisses her.

I don't really understand after that so i might guess some: cafe owner or Shinako is getting married (dunno who, since they are alike, in a dress, with wedding hair so pretty unable to tell). Rou has some talks with the girl he's living with. Not sure what happens. The End.

So here's my thought. I really want Rikuo and Shinako to end up together, but i know flags are telling me that they are not. It's expected but i'm disappointed. It hits my feelings like a truck. It reminds me of Natsu no Zenjitsu. God damn these authors, can we have a better ending for vanilla person like me? Still, i give it a 9. Good read, nice art. Fucking ending anyway.

It could be great story but...

... it's too long. Heroes are too indecisive and let's be honest - they are too good-natured and too kind. People are usually more egoistic and self-centered, and feelings of love always come with jealousy.
Nethertheless this story is too long. People tend to sway under pressure of other's feelings. I doubt ever exist a human who can stay solid then someone express such strong love towards them.
In all honesty, I cheer for Haru to be paired with the main hero in the end since she deserves it the most.

This manga is all about unrequited love

And I'm really excited to see how far she takes it with these characters. Have not read a romance that almost exclusively focused on the theme on unrequited love (for all parties involved) since Honey & Clover. I wonder if it's not a coincidence that Art and Art School was a theme in both works. Either way, I really love Kei Toume's art style and writing. Have not enjoyed a romance manga this much in a long time.

This manga is too realistic that it becomes boring

I really tried so hard to actually finish reading it all the way to the latest chapter possible, but I just couldn't take it anymore as the plot is really slow, boring, and there's no "real conflict" that sparks interest in me as a reader.

Rather than expecting character development, I saw a lot of self pity contest between characters.
I couldn't take it anymore because probably I don't relate myself to these character as I am not that kind of person in real life who always dwells on stupid trivial things like these characters in this manga does.

There's also no objective at all to be given to reader, instead we just see boring daily life between characters, and when the main characters doesn't get character development, the mangaka instead decided to branch the story out to the side characters. Story then becomes unnecessary complex, not in a way that is intelligently complex, but more like complex in a very unimaginative way possible. It's like trying to figure out what is going on inside all these loser's mind.

What you are going to see here is a loser protagonist that does not want to develop his character and actually becomes something in his life, but rather dwells on his past, and rather contempt with his present situation. He's like an invincible guy, but unlike your usual interesting mysterious character, this guy is just plain boring. Then you will see two other characters that would create like love triangle drama , but it doesn't stop between these three people, as the story goes on, there's a fourth character that is going to be involved , and I'm not suprised there will be a love polygon drama later on the story.

Storyline can be summarized like this: A like B but B likes C , but too bad C likes D , but D can't like C because D already dead. And here comes E who also likes C , C having dilemmatic situation where C has to choose between E and B, but wait...B also has a dilemma as B's heart probably going to switch from C to A.

So now you see how dumb the relationship in the story is? If you are the drama guy / girl in real life who enjoys this kind of relationship, then probably you also enjoy reading this manga. As for me, this is boring. Reading this manga is no different than watching soap opera drama in TV.

Looks Like Reality, Japanese Style!

Almost everything in this manga--the characters, their economic situations, their hopes and disappointments, and above all their smoldering feelings--is very much like stuff that has happened to me or people I've known. Some of this realism is actually painful to watch, particularly the long, passive avoidance by the main character of the good things reality is offering him. Nevertheless, that's the way people, in fact, often are!

And the other characters in this manga, who are mostly less irritating than the MC, make up for his unwillingness to move on by being especially likable and interesting. Toume Kei is a woman, and maybe that's one reason why her female characters tend to be so deep and interesting. Or maybe not--but in any case a story with such interesting women in it is, perhaps paradoxically, bound to be of extra interest to male readers. And I believe that most female readers will like this manga simply because they will probably be able to thoroughly identify with it.

In short, it's a very well-told story about romantic uncertainty playing out in the lives of people in their early 20s. That's one of the great themes of story-telling, and this is a very good story of that sort.

And please note this is a story of JAPANESE people, who generally are expected to live up to high standards of work, decency, and loyalty, and are especially expected not to have sex with anyone but the One they finally find they'd like to spend their whole life with. This is the story of people growing up into this society and its expectations. That's bound to be quite a struggle!

I like it. Some other people might complain that it's slow and nothing really happens at first but that happens in most slice-of-life romances. The story and art are a good combo and it's not that frustrating to read. In the start it might seem that the main character is going to be one of those "pathetic, can't-do-anything" type of guys but he's clearly not. He has a strong personality and is a good guy.
