Description
Ritsu inherited his sixth sense from his grandfather, along with a demon guardian named Blue Storm. Strange things just seem to happen around these two, and it's left to them to get to the bottom of all these mysterious events. Each story is independent but features recurring characters you'll come to know and appreciate as they, each in their own way, try to deal with things 'not of this world'.

Note: Won the Excellence Prize of manga section of Japan Media Arts Festival in 2006. Has sold over 5.5 million copies.

I really love the series, each stories feels eerie but still somewhat poetic. I hope any scan team will continue to translate this manga as it’s not licensed yet in my country.

This manga does not need modesty. For those who like supernatural and Japanese folklore listen well: there is simply no better manga than this. Unfortunately, it lacks interested scanlators, but the existing translation is very well done.

I'm so in love with Ritsu, Lol, even though I don't know why the author seem to picture him as an average looking boy who's not too smart in studying, but I find the main char is very charming n smart, one disappointment for me is that the lack of his relationship with his surrounding such as his school ground situation (which is b'cos the author said she was very lazy to draw school scene =_=;wink, but overall I really recommend this manga, its fun to read Ritsu adventures smile

This is a very good series. The stories are fascinating, and some can be quite scary. It amazes me how the author can come up with those horror stories themselves, while weaving them to the reality of our main characters with wonderful arts.

Highly recommended.

This is comparable to Natsume Yuujinchou. However, this one tended towards the horror aspect, while Natsume Yuujinchou is more about the relationship among humans and youkais. Both has its own merit. Both are very touching and both carry a nostalgic feeling.

I considered Hyakki Yakoushou one of the best manga I've ever read. Even though its lack of relationship and tension, I do not wish for any of that to happen. If they might happen then it is up to the author. And I do believe if sometimes she does decide to do so, it will be just as excellent as the other parts of the series.
The only disappointment was during my Japan trip, I could not find a single book store selling the the title! Everywhere was Hitman, Hitman, Hitman, Hitman and... One Piece (I liked One Piece though LOL). Why-The-Face?! confused It was among the few titles I wished own... DANG!

OHMYGOD... It's been LICENSED! Fuck NO! ect. was doing such a fine fine job with the translation TT_____TT Now where can I find this... TT_______TT

A little too contained and episodic for me. Hard to get attached to characters as there are no focal relationships--you really read for the plot with incidental personal relationships on the side. However, the writing and art are both excellent, as are the characterization of the various recurring spirits.

Touching

I guess this sounds strange considering the supernatural aspect but I find this manga's characters and their stories very touching. Not all the time of course, but when it intended to be it did it well. I still feel very much for the main character when he reminisces about his grandpa, or the chapter about his first friend, I just get the feeling that despite the randomness of the situations the characters, particularly Ritsu, are very realistic and well developed. Also I have mixed feelings about "Blue Storm", from the description you'd think he'd be there all the time, but his role is much smaller than one would think. On the one hand it's under utilizing a great character, but it makes the story more realistic since he doesn't jsut show up to save the day all the time.

9/10 (I do love the series but the amount of deaths, and the sort of nonchalant way they're presented bothers me, like you'd think the protagonist would try harder to do something sometimes when there are supernatural serial killings or something, but he just takes his sweet time figuring things out, unless it directly involves someone he cares about.)

Hyakki Yakoushou is a strong supernatural title with a lot of great atmospheric storytelling. The slightly linked anecdotes are interesting, and the interactions between some of the characters are compelling, although the focus always remains on the supernatural incidents themselves, rather than the characters. It's certainly one of the best supernatural titles out there.

That aside, I do have a bit of a complaint. The storytelling is often very forced- the incidents seem artificial, and are often seemingly randomly inserted. Normally this isn't much a problem with these kind of stories, but the fact is that Hyakki Yakoushou is making an honest attempt at having an overarching storyline, and as a result fails to develop the incidents as well as it could on an individual basis, choosing instead to further the characters and ignore circumstance. This is what really gets me, and if it weren't for the gross failure of this aspect it could easily stand shoulder-to-shoulder with series like Natsume Yuujinchou and Mushishi in everything but art. As it is it is simply a very good series that fails to reach quite the same level of excellence, though it makes it quite far.

This is one really good ghost manga!! It's fun but it also can be scary at times. Because I grew up reading Japanese manga, I didn't think I'd get scared reading one now. But apparently not. The author can really build the atmosphere. And the characters are also likeable.
