Think Sagara Sousuke from FMP! post-fumoffu but with no government/brass leash or mission assignment (at least, none so far in the first 10 chapters), along with much better integration skills, and you basically have Yu Ijin.
Sole(?) plane survivor in a foreign land at the age of 9, Ijin survives by being trained as a child mercenary. He's brought back by a Korean lieutenant he rescues during a mission 10 years later and is given 6mo of assimilation training to get back to Korean society and his remaining family (a younger bullied sister and a grandfather who both don't know about his mercenary past) and to go to high school.
I admit, I have a weakness for these types of stories: the whole underestimated/unassuming kid that turns out to be a badass and is only trying to protect his way of life and those he cares about (and it being done in a school setting). What I really appreciate from this story is that this treats Ijin like a merc. He just has things he wants to protect and goes about doing so in ways you'd expect from someone with his background.
I look forward to seeing how his story will be playing out and where this goes. As he's in his last year of high school, I don't imagine that the plot will be limited to the school setting for long if the story continues for a long time either. But I do hope the plot stays in this setting for awhile to get in some fun school hijinks. And it says "Romance" in the tags here but I've yet to see a FL anywhere. Edit: As of chapter 11, a potential FL has entered, but it's still too early to tell for certain. It's been mostly focused on family relationships, which has been a positive for this if anything.
Definitely recommend to those who like stories like these.
