Description

I stopped reading at the "nurturing bug" chapter because it was all downhill from there.

How Lin W. first met Fusu and her reasons for "freeing" him were a red flag from the start. The fact that she saves him because of his face and not because it's "human" trafficking and slave trading is a crime that she is supposed to enforce, is the beginning of the problem with their relationship. She saves him and claims him as her "boy toy" (sigh). She releases him later on because she was scolded...by Gu Donmu(?) and not because what she did was wrong. Anyway, this supposedly smart woman just kicks him off her cart and leaves him behind (fortunately he is very capable and cunning). Merfolk are supposed to be an endangered species/people and the way characters in this story treat him (them) really pisses me off. Anyway, Fusu manages to find her again (is being held as a slave) and she takes him in again. I understand that this is what Fusu wants and has plotted to make it happen but she still refers to him as her "boy toy" and doesn't listen nor believe some of the things he says or trys explaining to her (a huge freaken issue that creates a lot of damage later on) about his people and his experiences. It was good that she didn't try taking advantage of him and most of the provocative situations were his doing but she DID label him as "boy toy" and he understood what that meant and was willing because he chose her and only her. She also did good with his schooling because he did have skills that needed training and it also meant he would learn self control and not immediately kill people that he dislikes. Unfortunately, she continuously fails to properly explain things (like human behavior, feelings and boundaries) to him, especially about herself and her motivations. She also fails at educating herself on Merkind. Her friend was the only one to attempt this by finding an ancient book about his kind, unfortunately they don't actually use the book besides look up the estrus cure (sigh). Lin also asks Gu about them but his knowledge of them is also limited and bleak. He is correct in some ways, unfortunately this information colors every action towards Fusu and eventually creates an even bigger problem. It was more like a self fulfilling prophecy. You know, do onto others as you would like done onto to you. Her obsession with her master, her revenge towards the Emporer, her hunger for power, how she treated certain people and her very poor handling of Fusu led to a heartbreaking separation and very ugly 2nd separation after the time skip. ---------| Now I said I stopped at the "Nurturing Bug" chapter, that whole thing (future chapters) was a big cluster fuk of bad. I had skipped forward to the pregnancy chapters (the baby is so heartbreakingly cute) and skimmed over them, yikes (in these chapters I found out that they had drunken sex?! Why was that necessary?!). I knew this was going to be terribly written because before this point characters were being really stupid and ignorant. There were some bad delay the plot excuses, like her friend not being able to find that room with the hidden staircase that leads to "the woman", when she literally just had to make note of her freaken location as she left. Unfortunately, this commander of the Red Army, has become an idiot and so have the others. Lin's failure at communication with Fusu and zero self reflection on her behavior and treatment of him and NEVER apologizing for any of it, also an idiot. The miscommunication is massive in this story and is never truly addressed. After everything, I am still on Fusu's side because he is the literal 'fish out of water'. No one bothers to really understand and know him or his kind. So much could have been cleared up if characters weren't dumbed down for contrived plot reasons. Did he do bad things? Yup. He was doing what he thought he needed to do. Everything else was the consequences of Lin's bad choices coming to bite her in the ass. It's not fair she gets to wipe away her pain when Fusu has to continuously deal with his own before and after the time skip and now has to take care of a sick weak baby because these humans are fuking disgusting. He can never move on because it's in his fuking dna. -------| Still so angry at the weak messy writing. I am curious how this ends in the novel though. If anyone knows, could you start a forum thread. The art changed during season 1 and it was so disappointing. It got worse towards the end with the "bug eyes" moments. Yeesh. It use to be so pretty too. Sigh. Fusu still looked okay sometimes but it was such a quality drop in so many ways.
