So yeah, when you read this, it's for the mood. It's utterly fantastic. There's this all-pervading aura of The End that just sets off the daily interactions (slice of life) with the two characters.
Too bad there's a bunch of issues that get in the way of it though. One, for whatever reason the author decided this would be a gag comic... and the gags are weak. Really weak. So the dichotomy between the aura and the gags COULD be good... but it's not.
Two, whenever the plot or character development rears their heads (which is a good thing!) it quickly gets lost. Like the author decided that we can't actually have plot or growth, that wouldn't be fun! Let's go back to bad gags and ignore the important stuff!
And then finally, the ending is... abysmal. It SCREAMS of axed ending. Not sure if it really was, but all along we've been dreading/awaiting the professors impending death, and there's some powerful moments of melancholy along the ride. And then the series just ends. With a ridiculous journey that is completely against how the story has been, that frankly is probably impossible, yet the logistics are kinda brushed off? Yet it doesn't seem like it's supposed to be a suicidal journey, but rather one of hope? No clue.
Oh, and the ending is open to interpretation at best. I'm pretty sure the series was axed, and the author TRIED to get an open ending, but failed at it. It just makes no sense.
TL;DR. The series isn't that great. Had potential, but failed in the delivery. If you want a better version that ruminates on death and mortality, check out the other series by the same author, Sousou no Frieren (which is spectacular in all the ways this isn't).
