I really love how this manga really dived deep into how toxic workplaces crush the souls of the people working for them. There is no way to simply "stick it out" in places like these, there is only exploitation. I've only read one other manga that had a similar topic, which was about domestic violence, so a much unhappier ending @_@
I thought this work was straight-forward, simple, and sweet! Tsurukame Mayo does a fantastic job of crafting her characters, I really enjoyed them all. Looking forward to more works from her!
edit: I keep coming back to this manga and re-reading it, and I have to say that the characters are really well crafted while keeping the story relatively light hearted. Each character has a fairly deep trauma, but it doesn't make the story super angsty and grim (even tho I live and breathe angst, give me that blood). The characters' traumas are actually quite commonplace and ordinary, the true tragedy is that they've both internalized them to the point where life seems normal to them with it, which is how a LOT of people come to live with their traumas and circumstances that come with them. It's how Hirokuni becomes used to being exploited, because he's been always made to feel useless and incompetent. It's how Kai becomes used to being abandoned, because that's always happened to him, ever since he was a child. Neither of their situations are anywhere near normal, but they both think of themselves as regular, normal adults. They take their situations in stride and think that that's just the way the world is, and it's not! The true beauty in this series is them making the other realize that no, their situations are not normal and that it's okay to want change! It's okay to want something for yourself for once in your life, because you are a person of worth who is worthy!!! I cry a lot when I re-read this manga because I was very similar to Hiro at one point in my life and it absolutely damn near killed me when I was forced to leave my job because my health started nosediving. I was in the hospital and all I could think about was the work I was leaving undone, it's so unhealthy!!! Okay, I've shared too much in this damn comment lol. Everyone please read this work and remember to cherish yourselves. You ARE worth it!
