The flaming cycle of art that spanned centuries!
Hasegawa Touhaku (1539 – 1610) was one of the greatest painters in the history of Japan, with the versatility to move between the blinding opulence of gold leaf panels and the serene minimalism that ink on paper can provide. His works, many of them classified as National Treasures, can still be seen today in various temples and museums.
In this manga, author Chie Shimomoto presents us with the burning passion and sacrifices that drove Touhaku, from the disillusionment in middle age — when his enthusiasm was extinguished due to his lack of renown or relevant work — to the death of the ruler Oda Nobunaga (1534 – 1582), which ignited the political scene, the fusion between art and Buddhism, the initial spark of aesthetic philosophy that saw beauty in the simple and imperfect (today known as wabi-sabi), and the flame of rivalries, until reaching the top of your career and immortalize yourself.
