So terrible
by jnatsumi

The beautiful art work DOES NOT cover up how terrible the storyline is. The main character is named BLONDINA. You think you can ignore it — like I did — but trust me, it’ll continue to eat at you over time. The villain story arc is not at all well developed. The story focuses too much on the romance (that moves very slowly and a bit weirdly) than the actual plot itself. Yeah, I get that romance is a huge part, but the ML is supposedly the chief of the beasts and he didn’t do shit. He was slow to move, slow to plan, slow to strategize. FL, too, was slow to catch on to the main plot. It’s so frustrating.

If you’re just here for the art work, yeah sure, go for it.
If you’re here for solid plot line, strong badass FL, look elsewhere. This is not at all satisfying.

It wasn't as bad as I expected

So I completed the series, overall it wasn't too bad a read for me. It wasn't deep, engaging or amazing in anyway. But it was fun to watch all of the light hearted cuddling. The story suffers from poor build up and execution but over all I think I could recommend this to someone.

The first half of the story, while the characters are young, the story is interesting as plot points are made, characters are introduced, and the building blocks for romance are being laid. It all starts to fall apart when time skips are tossed into the story and the author forgets the reader would like to see the romance grow.

The cultural differences are hinted at from time to time, but are never really explored which would have been interesting to see the couple trying to adapt to each others cultures and the awkwardness of it all. Instead everything remains surface based and we don't really learn much about the sacred beast. Some beast appeared without stones in their foreheads, are they sacred, can they talk? Some wolves appeared too, are they sacred as well? No idea.

Even the villain lacks proper flushing out. The villain has a goal at first but at some point you have no idea what they are trying to do. At first it was to win the crown, then they just start doing things that have nothing to do with winning the crown and it just stops making sense.

The art direction in this is not very good either, with many scenes feeling like a jerky car ride. You get random time skip scenes that are not portrayed well, then you get scenes where you can't tell if the characters are just cuddling all night long or actually doing the devils tango all night. I'm not saying things need to be explicitly shown, but other stories pan to a flower falling or something to inform the audience of what is about to or is happening. This story doesn't tell you anything.

From things like the side affects of being marked or the birth of the black panther, all of that is never explained for some reason. The author sort of just drops the information in a "oh yeah there are side effects" sort of matter and you just happen to learn why the black panthers mother died. The way the information is dropped in a "oh yeah I forgot" sort of fashion makes it hard as a reader to consider it as an actual danger.

Appreciable (?)

As mentioned by many it is a very easy and light read...initially I was really interested to find out what the real plot behind this manhwa was but as I went on with the chapters, I was disappointed.
The story leaves you with nothing. I cover that they are "passing" works (not like books) but generally every manhwa and manhua always leaves me with something, like a character, a particular scene that moved me, a particular plot, etc...in short: anything.
This one doesn't.
I'm sorry but it really had great potential, but wasted.
My final grade is 6. Higher definitely not, nor lower as I have definitely read worse.
Do I recommend reading it? I am sorry, but I do not recommend it.

Honestly, I thought it was pretty bad and I really wanted to like it.
Starts off okayish, nothing too fancy, kind of a light easy read. The plot kinda doesn't exist, unlike the main characters who are there just to exist. The overarching story (at ch 20ish where I am now) is, uh, the characters growing up? A lot of the time the imagery jumps to a completely different scene and is a bit confusing as to what has happened. It just feels very disjointed ...

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The characters just sorta develop feelings for eachother, or come to the conclusions they have them within a couple of panels.

Blondina just sort of accepts she is in love with Amon, who she grew up with and treated mostly as a cat? This was very jarring to read.

3/10 from me, for the art and cute portrayal of small cat amon in the early stages.

Its Basic

Just a regular story where a girl meets a transforming cat, the twist is that the girl is in a difficult social setting (ie royal family hates her, and she from a commoner background). Nothing special.

Also read the light novel, thats also basic. Not any better or any worst. There are some interesting differences between the two, but not major plotwise differences or pacing.

Best to Read the Novel Version
by RAGApeace

The manhwa version leaves out a lot of necessary information for world-building and background, so while it's not difficult to follow along, it does leave you with a lot of questions that aren't answered about how the world operates. And the pacing is kind of all over the place: some plot points are dumped on you without being fleshed out beyond the important aspects, while other points do get fleshed out but suffer from a lack of necessary information to help you fully appreciate the scene.

Fortunately, the storytelling is much better done in the novel, with the plot points better fleshed out and explained without feeling like an exposition dump. I suppose it's just the difference you'd typically expect from a novel's adaptation.

So, to fully enjoy this story, I recommend reading the novel first and then reading the manhwa as a supplement to the novel. You can just read the manhwa, as it is still engaging and still covers the important bits, but you'll miss out on a lot of details that would give the story a more solid setting.

Cats and Coonts

[as of chapter 35]

"I Raised the Beast Well" has very much worn out it's welcome with me. Much of the minor drama and intrigue that was bought about by a new plot and characters has lost it's luster. Blondina current situation is boring and none of the overarching plot threads or the core romance is capturing my imagination either. Plus, I can't be the only one who thinks the character design of Amon is a little strange now he has gotten older. Almost as if the artist doesn't know how to draw the proportions of attractive men with excessive pectoral muscles (lol). Avoid unless starved. 5/10

[as of chapter 16]

Despite some pacing and presentation issues, “I raised the Beast Well” is shaping up to be an enjoyable little tale. It’s a well trodden formula and can lack sophistication, but it has packed quite a number of cute and engaging moments into it’s 16 chapters. I look forward to it’s continuation. 7/10

I'm only speaking for the 14 chapters that are currently out. The art is gorgeous and the dialogue is tightly written. At such a young age, the illegitimate princess can hold her own, which I like. Hopefully it stays that way!

Also, who can resist such a cute kitty!
