Description

A handsome, selfish noble falls for a beautiful, kind commoner -- at least, that’s how the story’s supposed to go. When an average college student wakes up as Ripley, an extra in her favorite romance novel, she resolves to enjoy the luxuries of her character’s status while watching the novel's plot unfold from the sidelines. However, her plans are soon derailed when she finds herself in bed with no other than Duke Zeronis, the novel’s hero! Dodging the villainess’ schemes, the Duke’s advances, and her own feelings, can Ripley keep the story on track and survive beyond the first night?

perfect comedy drama

This story was fun and light hearted at the beginning with a hilarious heroine and a male lead that at first appeared to be the common domineering type but as the story progresses he becomes an agreeable and loving man without taking his main personality apart. The character evolution on both leads was wonderfully done 👍

As for the story, it was a beautiful journey of character growth with a great plot. The comedy, for me, was on point and even so the story is actually rational unlike some commenters said, but rational within the comedy tag that is the first tag attached to this story so keep that in mind so you can enjoy this to its fullest. It doesn't make sense to expect a serious drama from a comedy. That said, this comic is actually very deep and moving and there is important drama going on. Fear not: there is happy ending and even happier side stories to enjoy. Aside from ten or so chapters the story is a happy and fun one.

The art is different, as in it's not very common to see nowadays but it's charming and very expressive. The illustrator portrays emotion and movement very well. The colours are lovely.

I think that for what it was proposed to be (comedy, drama, fantasy, Josei) this story is quite perfect and it's difficult to find a mistake on its execution.

Fun, then a bit angsty and then full of fluff

This starts as a comedy and ends with a lot of nice, well done fluff.
In the middle there is some character silliness based drama and some evil schemes drama, but it isn't too bad, and the end result is worth enduring through the small annoying parts.

One annoyance for example, a minor spoiler:

Most of the troubles the danger the FMC goes through could have been avoided if she was assigned a bodyguard. She is the daughter of a Count, even if she didn't have one by default, after being violently attacked multiple times you would think conclusions would be made.

Recommended for the romance and humor. There is basically no story besides the romance.

i don’t know how to properly explain it, but the FL just isn’t likable to me? I was only able to get through three chapters, and I honestly have no interest in reading more. I’d rather spend my time and coins on something else.

Kinda not cool how the ML pressured the FL and made her think that she had forced him when really it seemed like the other way around. Ignoring that, the rest of the story is good.

FML, ML and Sylvia are adorable. Enjoy the read. Absolutely gorgeous and vintage art. Satisfying ending with just a little irk in the beginning (Zeronis forced Ripley into the marriage)

There would be no story if the female lead had sense, otherwise it's good

The art is very good, first off. However, like the title says the plot is moved entirely by the female lead not having a brain. Sure, at times the bad guys do their thing, but each time it's so obviously coming (most times she even gets warned about it) and preventable that the female lead's actions are as if she's digging her own grave. And how does she get out of all of these conflicts? Half the time it's her good heart that gets across to others, and half the time it's just others (the duke) conveniently there to save her.

The female lead thankfully has a personality that's easy to like - she's genuinely good and caring and has a backbone. She's definitely an active rather than passive character, and relatable-y funny. This is balanced out by how she gets herself in trouble without any thought of consequences or for the feelings of those around her, and how that doesn't change throughout the whole story. There's no character growth here! Since she means well and situations end well it ends up okay, but it is frustrating to see play out over and over - and poor duke, especially. While I typically don't mind cluelessness as a personality trait especially for comedic purposes (I like Bakarina, after all), again when all the conflict comes directly from this it gets tiring.

The romance is pretty shallow (she's the first to be kind to him so he's devoted to her, and why wouldn't she like him), but it's nice to see two characters love and care for each other so it's not bad.

Where the story shines is with its comedy. Already mentioned the pretty art but all of the comedic expressions are great and really add to the frequent bits. Though I didn't find most of it laugh out loud funny I'm still really impressed with the well-executed dialogue and art.

The other characters besides the female lead are also all great and likeable.

While I mainly touched on the reasons this isn't a ten - the art, comedy, and likeable characters make this an overall good read.

The FL is funny and clumsy, but not frustrating. Her friendship with the original FL is cute, as well as the other side characters, although her maid is my favorite. The ML can get a bit too possessive and overbearing, but their dynamic is more comedic (him getting frustrated with her because he spend time with her and she's too busy with matchmaking others or with her business) than toxic. It's a light-hearted, easy read, but the characters are fleshed out and the plot moves at a good speed, so it was an enjoyable read.
So overall, I felt it was worth my time (although the side story is dragging a bit. With only one episode a week, I've been on just the side story for six months!), and feel people are being super harsh considering how many other trash stories get an avg 8 star ratings with underdeveloped characters and unoriginal plots.

Consistently cute

Wowww look at all these low and harsh ratings here! Just goes to say everyone has different tastes. 😛

I, for one, really enjoyed this series. It was very consistent throughout. The same delightful humour was kept, and in no way did it drop or grow old -- which is super hard especially for a long running series like this (two years!). I really like Ripley and Sylvia's fun dynamic -- it kept everything fresh. XD

But, most of my points goes to the AMAZING ART STYLE. JUST WOW. It's very unique and stands out on its own in contrast to some of the other artwork out there. So pretty.

I will say, it kinda got boring towards the end. But meh I still chose to give this a 10, for all the reasons above. I liked it enough.

So yeah, if you like/want something sweet, light hearted, funny, romantic, cute, and adorable, this one's for you!

Frustrating read

The First Night With the Duke is a frustrating read. The premise had potential, but the execution is buried under juvenile writing. The FL is written as so staggeringly stupid that it's impossible to suspend disbelief. We're told she was a college student in her previous life, yet she behaves with less awareness than a child. The "comedy" hinges almost entirely on "haha, she's dumb," which wears thin by chapter 10 and becomes unbearable by chapter 30.

The ML fares no better. Depending on how you interpret their first night together, he's either a rapist or a manipulative liar, and in both cases, someone who routinely threatens to kill the FL if she doesn't comply. Yet the story still expects the reader to accept him as a romantic lead with the moral high ground. The romance between the two feels less like a love story between adults and more like petty squabbles between kids on a playground, only with a veneer of nobility slapped on top.

The tonal whiplash also doesn't help. The first chapters lean into comedy, but any sense of humor quickly vanishes, replaced by endless angst that feels shallow and repetitive. By the time you reach the later chapters, you're left asking yourself: is this supposed to be a romance, a parody, or just a long-running joke at the expense of the FL's intelligence? Whatever the answer, it's not satisfying.
