It was such a real pleasure to read this manga !
I bought vol 1 and vol 2 (I was initially waiting for the english scan to get completed but lucky me Melon no Aji got licensed in french this year) and I was debating whether it was a good investment or not cause both volumes are super short (4 chapters) + I never read this mangaka before.
Well, let me tell you I enjoyed this series so much. It’s so different from any other BL manga I’ve ever read. There is this unique atmosphere, very melancholic, quiet and chilled; the art style is simplistic, minimalist (black or white background, use of pictures instead of drawings in certain panel etc..) but still refined and clean.
From outside this manga seems extremely simple, nothing outstanding, BUT the more you go in the story the more the characters, story and plot reveal themselves to be complex and deep.
Indeed, this story is all about
depression
.
This is the big revelation ! And it’s weird cause as someone who went through the same thing at one point in my life, even tho I recognized all the symptoms, I didn’t put 2 and 2 together. Even tho throughout the manga I was thinking « d*mn, I was like him before », « oh, I do the same thing, I avoid large crowds because it makes me anxious » …
I sincerely think the author did an amazing job at portraying
depression
. It was realistic and accurate and if I’m not misinterpreting her note that’s probably because she went through the same thing as her character.
If you need to read something similar, read Happy Of The End by Ogeretsu Tanaka. The atmosphere is different but the plot is similar. A cohabitation between two wounded men, who will find solace in the other.
