It's a pity, really. Everything about this manga from length of serialisation (I'm betting it could've run 3 times longer if allowed; there was a lot of room for expansion), characterisation and even the yaoi scenes was brimming with unexpended potential. However, the author regretfully decided to compress everything into six short chapters. The first two chapters were actually well-paced - then came the third where everything started accelerating like a bullet train. The end-result is a rushed, albeit very pretty, product that leaves you wanting more because it could have been so much better. Except that it's over and I'll just have to live with it.
The premise was alright, an excuse creative enough to make the plot acceptable, if not viable. The art got me hooked from the very start. The tone was always kept light, focusing on the trials and tribulations of Ryoichiro as he fusses over his new guest. It'd be good had it been kept that way, because in truth there was a lot to write about; unfortunately, the story dived into a new arc too quickly and of which was also resolved too quickly. I can pinpoint the exact moment when the story took a nosedive to join the "story exists so I can draw sexy time" group of yaoi mangas. It was disappointing, because I was actually getting emotionally invested. There was this one scene where the two leads make an informal promise to visit someplace together (chapter 3), but it was never adequately covered. Just one illustration of how much more could have been done with the story if it had been permitted to run longer. It was sad watching it fall...
That's not to say it doesn't have its merits. For one, the art is amazing. Qaltaqa's probably the hottest seme I've ever encountered (superficially speaking). Physical appearances don't get any better than this. Characterisation isn't morbidly bland, which is an achievement in itself. Again, Qaltaqa's physically memorable, and the language barrier offers an additional twist on his personality. Ryoichiro behaves like a typical shoujo lead but has some backbone, which is good enough since I've learnt not to expect much. His expressions are great, too. He carries most of the humour throughout the manga, loveable geek that he is.
Sex is alright. Again, there could have been much more if only it was extended. Qaltaqa's background means he behaves a little differently in bed, and Ryo's fun to watch. We're offered a short glimpse into the potential adventures they could have.... and then the manga ends. Gosh, just thinking about this makes me want to cry. WHY.
While I enjoyed the ride, I'm just disappointed because it could have been so much better.
