Description

New York in the 1970s. Trevor Edwards is a successful lawyer who just recently broke things off with his fiancée. One night, Trevor realizes that he lost important documents pertaining to a client, and he can't find them anywhere. Just as he's ready to accept defeat and the end of his career, salvation arrives in the form of Gene—a young cleaner who works in the same building as Trevor's lawyer firm—who saw him drop the papers on his way out. After returning them, Trevor discovers that Gene is homeless and invites him to stay at his house to escape the cold winter night. But is that enough to repay the man who saved him?

This age gap is ruining the story for me...

I have thoughts on both volumes separately with slight spoiler stuff(?) for the 2nd vol. I'm just gonna share both and put all of 2 under a spoiler block.

Vol 1

99.9% of the notes I took are about the age gap and how I felt that Gene didn't need to be 19. As I read on, him being 19 is the point of his background. However, Trevor, on the other hand, could have been 23 at the very most. Still would've given me an ick but not as bad as him being 34. His Lawyer career is likely why he's so much older and it only really mattered twice for his backstory. There are and were layers a lot younger than that, he didn't need to be 34. As if this age gap didn't make me feel any more uncomfortable, bro had to go and compare himself to fucking Gustav von Aschenbach. Who I had to look up and I should be giving this 2 stars for making me do that.

On a lighter note, I did love these characters individually. I wanted to know more about Gene and Trevor separately and their respective families, I wanted to know more about Karen, about Ms. White and her son Ryan, more about the nephew Gene! It wasn't as emotional as I hoped going into this but I really did want to know more.

Vol 2

> I've already yelled about thoughts on the age gap so I went into volume 2 just trying to enjoy the story… Honestly, though, I started to not care about Gene and Trevor's story at the beginning. It wasn't really until the moment with Ryan and then everything after that had me so much more invested in everyone. I found myself more interested in the present day. Mostly in nephew Gene. I did like the way chapter 2 ended, though. This and volume one did get laughs out of me, I will say that. I also almost cried seeing present day Gene and Trevor literally repeat their encounter.

I would actually love a spin-off for them. I was so excited to see my baby boy (gn) Gene meet my other baby boy Gene and for them to just talk. And then there's also Jean (Danny's daughter) and I wanted them to meet her too! I want so much for nephew Gene, I'm pretty sure he's my favorite character overall.

I forgot that this was a spin-off from another manga and that Oz is from that spin-off that's NOT an age gap so I'm gonna try reading it. I thought it was a little weird that he got screen time that amounted to nothing in volume 1 and then showed up at the end of volume 2 like I was supposed to know him. Now I know it was just a bone to throw to the people who read that.

beautifully written, more than you would have anticipated

I wholeheartedly agree with the previous comment by zakiue, this was a beautifully written story about homosexual love in the 70s with a happy outlook without disregarding the general disapproval of society. The story-telling through diary entries and the connection with the nephew gave the story a really sentimental atmosphere which brings out the way their love bloomed. I definitely recommend! Even more so because it is only 10 chapters, though it definitely felt like more.

Even though the story didn't end the way I wanted or hoped to end, it deserves 10/10. The art is beautiful and the story is well written, you can feel, that the author really thought it through.

SPOILER:
Regarding the ending. I understand that this was the author's decision, to make the ending like that, but I just can't understand the characters. I mean if they really loved each other that much as they claimed it, how could they be apart for so long or even be fine with never meeting again... Maybe that's the only thing I'm missing from the story. The thoughts and feelings of Gene, while he was apart. Did he really never plan to go back to Trevor? Okay, he wanted to study, explore, find himself, etc. but was he really okay with never seeing someone he loved so much? Trevor's side I can understand it a little bit better because of the journal.
Then they meet again by luck (so to say). And yeah, after so many years, feelings can change, so it could be they don't love each other anymore, it is just friendship. But I think you should be able to decide, which one. If it's still love, maybe you need some time to catch up on with each other because of being apart for so long, but then get back together. However, if it's not LOVE, just LIKE, why moving together..? Hmmm..
I just feel sorry, because it feels like they still love each other, and loved each other all along, but they wasted sooo many years for being apart.
But that's just my POV.

I absolutely LOVE The Scene of My Rumspringa, of which this is a spin-off. But Dear Gene is my new favorite.

This is such a lovely story, made even more touching through the younger Gene's perspective. The flashbacks are very well paced—the whole thing is very well paced. It feels longer than it is, in a good way. Like, it should be difficult to cover so much ground in only 10 chapters, but it doesn't feel like anything was left out. Of course, that being said... I'd love to read more about Gene and Trevor, or about the younger Gene.

I appreciate the way that this manga acknowledges some of the nuance of homosexuality in the 70s-80s-90s without making it the focal point of the story—actually, it's barely a factor at all. But it's not like they're living in some idealized alternate timeline, it still feels grounded in reality. It's just not really relevant to the story. I didn't think of it until afterwards, but as a reader, it was a huge relief to read a story that felt realistic but not like persecution porn (iykwim).
