It's not bad...

...but the tragedy/drama of it all can become rather exhausting. I don't know... I thought it was exhausting, but I read the whole thing in one go, raws and all. Someone commented that the main characters' sexuality was not given any depth, but
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
the author actually does try and cover her tracks by saying Ian had had a bit of adventure in Greece, whereas Jeremy admits he has no experience with girls so doesn't know how to deal with them. This makes sense, when you consider that boys in that situation will be rather afraid to approach the opposite sex for several reason, plus, they also find a way to discover their own control by using their sexuality against other men. It's a rock and a hard place, really.

On the other hand...
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I found Jeremy's decent into "homosexuality" because he has no experience with girls and because of the sexual abuse a bit demeaning, given that at the beginning of the manga, the author has the boys talking about whether or not homosexuality is a 'choice.' And, basically, Jeremy makes the 'choice' to stay with men when he was 'originally' heterosexual.' Of course, I can't say what the author was thinking, but this really bothered me. Although there are many people who experience such abuse (sad, I know) who no longer really know how to relate to the opposite sex, that doesn't make them 'gay' or even 'bisexual.' So, because of the strong psychological aspect to this story... I want to argue that Jeremy wasn't gay, but made to not understand relationships with 'females' very well at all. This shows true by the end of (what for me was an understandable but still unsatisfactory) the story.

As for Ian... he was given a kind and blithe personality, which, by the middle, is twisted by revelations about his father and his love for Jeremy. Or, perhaps, we are going the other end of the spectrum and, as 'Greg's' phantom persists, it's because Ian is HIS son... I really felt for him because trying to help someone with severe PTSD is extremely hard. Meanwhile he's trapped by his own lust/love for Jeremy... which was only funny because, BAM! out of the blue, he just admits it.

I think this tumultuous tale is a hard read because from about 10+ volumes, Jeremy becomes more and more unstable, punctuated with periods of lucidity. He's surrounded with people with mental disorders and suicidal tendencies, drug addicts, some very ODD portrayals of gay men... and the whole thing is interesting... but exhausting.

I enjoyed it, but I was glad it was over.

nervous energy, anxiety, suffering, sorrow, darkness...

I've been reading this manga for OVER TWO YEARS. Initially, the story was contained and full of possibilities for me because I had only read one volume. I was saddened by the lack of what I had available to read and decipher. However, as more chapters were translated, I was drawn in by the intense energy and emotion. I knew from the summary what tragedies would occur and that Jeremy's horror with Greg would only be a small length of the story that would create a large impact on his character and the rest of the volumes. It seems like happiness is ephemeral and short lived for these characters, which is sad. I am currently on volume 11, and it is madness and so forth on what has happened to these characters.

The reason I have given this an 8/10 is because

of what has happened with Ian and Jeremy's relationship. It is actually somewhat uncomfortable and unfortunate to see what has become of Ian and how he and Jeremy are continually haunted by Greg. I actually thought that they would commence their sexual relationship through some kind of understanding with each other rather than Jeremy soliciting money from Ian. BUT I know it will probably change and develop differently and that right now the story is like this to build up character changes and the plot line. So honestly, I'm not angry but it still feels sad and frightening how Ian has lusted after Jeremy and how Ian has kept his sexual and romantic relationship with Nadia while still sleeping with Jeremy
Since I'm not finished with the manga, my view will surely change but right now I'm a bit put-off by the characters...

All in all, this is truly a landmark in manga by the amazing Hagio Moto, who has created so much depth and darkness.

Perfect insanity

Wow. This is the best psychological story I've ever read. You can see Jeremy going insane very slowly, chapter after chapter. It's poetically dark and painful. It hurt when I read it, but it was so insanely enticing, so deep and bottomless. The secrets, the symbolism, the weirdness of Jeremy's words as he starts to lose it, it all sucks you in and you can't let go.

This is so much better than any regular manga. This is the stuff that stays with you forever.

Do not let this one pass you by(especially good for those who like a good plot). I have to say that this was one of the best and might be my favorite manga of all time. It just makes me think, like really think about the character's predicament and I just feel so much for all of them. If I were to be asked if there's a manga that had the most "life" I would hands down choose this one. I felt very pulled into the story as if I were there sometimes, although this might be due to my excessive imagination.

Dark...

A dark but incredibly addictive manga. As weird as this may seem, it's very rare to see any type of manga which dosent glorify sexualised violence in any way. A Cruel God Reigns is such a manga. Rather, we see the impacts of the abuse on Jeremy over a period of time and the psychological toll it takes on his bright, considerate and happy personality.

Speaking of Jeremy's mother and stepfather, wow, I don't think I've ever wanted a characters to die as much as I did these two! haha. But really, its saying something when a character rouses a reader to feel that way. The abuse greg inflicts on Jeremy is horrific, and even his mother is abusive in her own way as she manipulates Jeremy in such a way that he feels he has to stay for her welfare even during the abuse.

Seriously, this is so worth reading I can not even begin to describe it.

Addicting, Suspenseful, Great, but.......

I don't like Shounen Ai at all, and the sexual abuse is incredibly disturbing, but other than those 2 things for me this is a very suspenseful manga that relates to things that happen in real life. It is a very different read than what i'm used to (shoujo, romance, supenartural, shounen, etc.) but I like it so far.

Everything the main character goes through is believable and not used for shock value. It's on the realistic side of sexual abuse and actually very disturbing. It's a very emotional and suspenseful manga, I'm excited to see what happens next. It's also a classic so more people should read it. It's well-written with wonderful art, I love all Moto Hagio's works but this is the best.

I could go on forever about how incredible "A Cruel God Reigns" is, but I'll try to keep it short. This series has it all for angst-lovers and shounen-ai fans. The writing is beautiful, the art is exceptional, and the characters are believable and relatable. As the summary says, this series won the first-ever Osamu Tezuka Cultural Prize Award for Excellence. It fully deserves it. This is what BL should be. "A Cruel God Reigns" deserves a lot more recognition than it's gotten by North American manga fans. I am extremely grateful to The Pink Panzer for scanlating this and bringing it to us.

A warning, though. There is NO fluff here. What the main character experiences is truly horrific, and not easy to watch. There is also no explicit sex. Many of the sex scenes are rape/abuse. They aren't gratuitous, though. They are an essential part of the story and if you can get through them, it's worth it.
