Description
Fujiwara Momoe, a girl who loves to eat, was raised by her rich parents eating only the best.
When her father dies from heart disease and Momoe has to support her and her mother, she can't stand the food that she makes (she never cooked before).
One day, she walks into a little French restaurant and recognizes the food from its taste. This is an unusual manga in that the heroine is a sophisticated young lady from a rich family who nonetheless manages to possess a very innocent and everyday kind of charm. She isn't stuck up at all and is completely guileless and sweet, but still manages to possess nerves of steel when it comes to pursuing her passion (becoming a chef). I like the fact that she doesn't whine and cry about losing all her fortunes and being forced to work like a peasant - she wants to work and is proud of herself, and carries herself well no matter the circumstance. (Lol except she's being clumsy, but that's a different matter altogether. 
)
The male lead starts off as apparently the typical shoujo hero - the dark, handsome, cynical, genius type - but layers are uncovered to reveal that he's actually just a man, not some sort of super-glitzy shoujo/josei ideal. I like that. That makes any developments (believably slow as they are) between him and the heroine very realistic.
Plus, the food is GREAT. This is definitely a food-lover's manga! Makes me hungry every time and is very educational besides! I want to try making some of the stuff they talk about... Since I'm from a very ordinary middle-class background lol, I honestly didn't know about some of the fancy dishes they talk about in here. It's really fun to discover all these amazing foods, not to mention the complex and high-pressure situations that professional chefs have to handle in famous restaurants. I recommend this manga to anyone with such interests.
Amendment as of 20th January 2010: The latest developments (as of chapter 15) have made me upgrade my rating from a 9 to a 10. HOLY CRAP, THIS MANGA IS AMAZING. It does things that most shoujo/josei mangas just don't have the guts to do... This is frankly the most realistic romance I've ever read, EVER, for the simple reason that...

... the main "couple" actually enter into relationships with other people in the course of the manga, presumably only to end up together at the end. THIS IS WHAT REAL LIFE IS LIKE, FOLKS. I mean, there's no such thing as One True Love Forever And Ever, at least not most of the time; it's possible to find one person and deeply love them, only to have that relationship not work out for whatever reason, and then somewhere down the line, you finally end up meeting another person that you'll actually spend the rest of your life with. That doesn't denigrate or lower the importance of that prior relationship - it was also sacred and important and sweet in its own way, even if it didn't last. It's possible to have a first love AND a second love, and most people have more than one relationship in their entire lives. THIS is what makes this manga so fabulous; it portrays realistic relationships, where the main man actually meets, falls in love with and then has a relationship with someone WHO IS NOT THE FEMALE LEAD for a portion of the manga, and the female lead herself might (or so it seems) be eventually won over by another man. And that's fine, that's life. I get a pretty strong feeling that the male and female leads will end up together, but I like it even more now that I can see a realistic development in them as people, not as co-dependent fictional entities; they're not just cookie-cutter characters who are "made for each other" or some such silly nonsense. They're adults, with adult tensions and responsibilities, and they may find love with other people before they find it in each other. And THEN, of course, their love will last. This is so realistic that it frankly kicks ass. :D I love this stuff. Bring it on! (Although to be honest, I don't even mind it if the male and female leads don't end up together in a conventional sense, but forge an immortal master/student bond. I mean, I trust this mangaka to entertain me and move me no matter what the heck she does. Go ahead and make my day, Makimura-sensei! I know I'll love it!)

Okay the art is downright horrible and makes me want run away screaming (although it seems to be very slowly improving). And the jokes are typical of the 1990’s so don’t think you will be swept away with laughter. But it does have charm, I’ll give it that. The characters aren’t stereotypical and their past and families are interesting and may surprise you.
The romance is slow moving but this manga isn’t really about that, it’s more about self growth and working hard to accomplish your dreams. It kind of gives you that satisfactory feeling afterwards if you know what I mean.
There are no cliff hangers and each chapter is almost self contained story on its own in the beginning (later on it becomes more of an ongoing story).
Give it a chance, try reading past chapter 3 and if you still don’t like it then I guess this just isn’t the manga for you.
Edit: Okay I just want to add that the art progressively gets better in later volumes and the story becomes more interesting.
Also in response to the above review, don't you get bored of every single shoujo focusing just on romance? I'm glad this one is different and the girl doesn’t blow her career for the guy she likes. The fact that it’s not just solemnly focused on romance shows it is Josei but I guess it’s more for people who have read manga for quite a while and so are bored of the whole only romance genre.

I posted before that this series starts to drag after a while (the whole thing with Momoe and Miki being depressed) but that passed and the series is good again. It's picked up the pace and things are moving forward. So if you get to that point where you feel like you want to put it down, don't! Because it will get better.
EDIT: I've just finished reading it and I felt like the ending was a bit rushed... I like happy endings and I wanted a few more pages of it.

It's been a while since I'd read a manga this good, it's been a while since I'd read a whole series and stayed up till the early hour engrossed in what would happen totally unable to stop reading! This series really appealed to me, the girl is around my age and she so admirable because she is strong and passionate. I never found her to be annoying she seemed like some one you'd meet in real life and I'd love to be friends with her. The pace of the manga can be slow and it probably stretched a few too many volumes but the manga-ka was able to give all the characters growth they needed and you sensed that everything was taking place over a long period of time. The romance is really good but it is not the main feature of the manga because the manga is really about people, their problems and the gifts they possess. Like all the previous reviewers the ending is a little rushed (and some aspects a little unbelievable) but not only is the ending rushed it ends very abruptly with no closure and no future scene. The fabulous WingtipCafe staff though provided us with their vision of the future (and do read it I agree with everything they wanted.) I really enjoyed this manga simply because there are so few like it, these days romance manga's have become so boring and samey, manga about gifted people are also boring and samey but this manga is all about people and it doesn't shy away from the serious issues in society, it creates really interesting characters that engage the reader to feel and care about them.

Momoe may seem ditsy and weak, but she has a resiliency and strength of character that doesn't seem apparent at first. She matches so closely to the kind of person I want to be--kind, happy, bright... She has skills that slowly grow, and she makes decisions that don't seem exactly that smart at first. I guess what I'm trying to say that she seems so human, so real, that it is almost incredible. The most recent chapter (Ch. 25) just blew me away with how insightful and beautiful it was. Her thoughts and feelings felt like they were mine (and I was her)... They were the kind of things that I've thought, from time to time. The last two pages were amazing.
As a manga about an aspiring cook, Momoe's growth as a cook is seldom focused on, just casually revealed in certain parts, especially in recent chapters. To be honest I don't really mind that Momoe's career as a cook isn't the point, because the story is so rich with other things--the insights and thoughts of all the characters as they go through their lives, for example... And there is enough of Momoe's growth, both emotionally and as a cook, to satisfy you.
As for the slow romance between Oda and Momoe... I've always had a lot of issues with stories where in the first chapter, right off the bat, the couple discovers that they're in love and become super-lovey-dovey. Sometimes it almost disgusts me, because real life, in no way, is like that. I'm in college and I've never had a boyfriend or actually dated someone... though I am probably the exception (unfortunately
). So I've always preferred the slow but fulfilling development of a relationship over one that happens quickly. And I feel like even though romantic development happens very slowly in some parts, there's always something that happens that you can see building up towards their eventual relationship.
Also I am so, so happy that Wingtip Cafe has been scanlated Oishii Kankei like crazy recently.D

this is one of the few manga that make me rooting for a happy-go-lucky female main character. this is because her character is fleshed out very well, and even when she's spoiled and she's childish, i do not get disgusted with her, but root for her because the mangaka able to make me understand her inner psychology very well.
this is also true for other characters - even when i hated them at first, when they are mean and disagreeable, the mangaka able to shape them to be a better person at the end of the manga and im so glad to meet such warm and lively characters.
the plot itself can be quite unrealistic, but i like it that everything is so high-class and out of reach, somehow i can pretend i am myself a refined lady and immersed myself in this high society world. it is truly great for the mangaka to bring out the world of the elites without the reader being disgusted - she made them so beautiful and full of warmth.
im glad i read this even though im not a fan of josei. i think others that ar not accustomed with josei should pick up this manga to immersed yourself in world with a great characterization.

This manga didn't leave a big impression on me, like, nothing special. Its story is PURELY about the evolution of the main girl on her carreer as a cook. She has a good and cheerful personality and she - SLOWLY - makes good progresses in her charachter. But I warn you, it's story's pace is REEEAALLY SLOW! I liked how the author explained the background of each charachter, explaining the reason why each of them had that specific personality/trauma.
But then, besides the slow pace of the story, the romance in it just didin't feel right. Oda-san is way too cold and mean. I didn't feel he loved Momoe-chan that much. I was cheering for her to end up with Takahashi-san, which is way more kind and caring. There weren't any parts which made my heart race or made me feel really interested. I was expecting a more involving romance in the story, but unfortunately I felt like it was cold and rushed.

The story is pretty good. It's 10 volumes (bunko) so you won't get bored--- and it really never got to a point where I'd say it's boring. The ending did feel a bit rushed, I wasn't that satisfied with how things ended... but overall, it's a pretty good read.

Well, this manga certainly is very different. For a few years, I have been primarily reading shoujo manga. I am in my teens; however, shoujo mangas do get very tiring.
In Oishii Kankei, there are comic reliefs, mouth-watering descriptions of fabulous French dishes, real-life drama, a girl's perseverance in her chosen career path, and a very convincing romance.
Don't let the 'horrible' art get you down from reading this, though! I believe this was a very popular style during the 90s and yes, the art does resemble that of itazura na kiss and hana yori dango. You'll get used to it, and yes; the art DOES improve!
To be frank, I don't really like the guy in this story. Sometimes arrogant and brooding guys aren't just worth it, and they waste quite a lot of your time and...er...emotions and tears. Haha!
Well, give OISHII KANKEI a try! I find it very interesting and a joy to read
