It's so tell-tale of a lot of actual relationships between real people, that it hit right where it should.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
The wife demands a divorce after the husband become unemployed and diagnosed with a serious disease. She's such an hyprocrite that she had me revulse. Like she clearly states that it's not beacuse she dislike him, when it's obvious that she's indifferent which is worse. I wish she had been more honest, telling him they grew apart, that would have been far better than telling him she doesn't have the strenght to support his current self.
To desert your ill spouse with such statement, and without batting an eyelid is a lack of respect and show grand egoism.
Now, it feels as I am defending the husband, which is not because he's definitely to blame for taking his wife for granted. Maybe if he implicated more with his family, instead of solely providing a salary, he would have met a different fate.

I wonder how many couples live like that, becoming estranged to the point of no return and only cohabiting.

I surely like the idea of the dog point of view, it added a nice vibe to convey the narration in a more affecting way. Overall, this book brought such bittersweet feelings, all thanks to the interlink factor.
But the stories with the old woman, and the one with the little boy were definitively my favourites, so pathetic...
