Description

Was alright until the last couple of chapters.

While the art was decent, the story felt very much like a slog (with some enjoyable moments) to get through because the opening scenes of chapter one already gave it a predeterministic conclusion. When the incident occurs later in the story, it doesn't happen exactly like how the beginning of the story depicted it. So there's already a break in continuity. Despite that predetermined conclusion, it was a very rushed end. chapter 28 to 32 was very edgy and a tonal shift even if there was a impetus on it occuring. Another tonal shift occurs in the last two chapters with a time skip to "happy romantic couple time." The final chapter really disturbed me with how borderline sociopathic both Maria and Lowell talk of her would-be-born child from their affair. Regardless of some people's views on topics like child-bearing, I really think it came off as inhumane, selfish from both of them, and I stopped rooting for Maria in the end. Lowell was solidly established as a sociopath so I stopped rooting for him roughly 28 chapter in, but for Maria, it was shockingly out of character. That last chapter soured my overall feelings towards the story and knocked it down from a 7 or 8 to a 4.

It's been three years since Lowell massacred every in the mansion aside from Maria and her personal maid and Lowell's co-conspirator, Corey. They fabricated a story that Lowell fought to protect the mansion but ultimately only manage to save Maria and her maid. Maria and Lowell often engage in sex and Maria is horrified to find out that she is pregnant. The fact she never could get pregnant with Jacques but managed to with Lowell causes her to panic as news of her pregnancy "without a husband" would cause people to suspect there could have been more to the incident at the mansion. She also brings up that if she's pregnant, she won't be able to leave the mansion for a year. Lowell has conflicting feelings too as he is happy that Maria being pregnant with her child would make her truly his. Though he notes forcing a miscarriage would also harm Maria's body, he still proposes to get rid of the child because this situation is causing distress for Maria. He assures her that the child means absolutely nothing to him as Maria will always be his number one priority. Maria is so moved by this declaration that she does envision having a family with Lowell and it makes her have a positive outlook on having this child. Lowell says he will proudly show off Maria as his mistress and their child as his bastard offspring relating it to how he was the illegitimate child of the Redford family. Maria lastly says she is find having a child without a husband but with her "pet demon" (referring to Lowell as her pet demon). All of this felt disguising when you realize Lowell could just take Maria as his wife using the fact that he needs to procure an heir as the reason. Maria is now a widow. She can remarry and avoid this disgusting train of thought the two of them had at the end of the story.
