Great series despite the hate it gets

I honestly don't understand the hate this one gets. It's like people just assumed it'll be Shiki and Fuyuki. As for the complaints about the drama, it's not bad. I mean, I've seen worse manga with worse drama. I'm pretty much caught up with all the chapters and it's a pretty enjoyable read. I just wish that it updates faster.

Started off decent enough even with the overused plot device. However the needless drama and even it's always used the easily fixed misheard situations like the.

The confession by Tsubasa to Fuyuki and her answer that was never fully heard because of plot drama in which he thinks she rejected him outright. Which wasn't the case and the author seems in no hurry to fix that misunderstanding anytime soon.

Now the author continues to play on that from girl to girl each taking their turn. Added on with the author's horrible release schedule that drags the already dragged out plot even more.

I have NEVER read a Romance manga (fresh perspective = more tolerable???)

Yes, never. Don't underestimate how much of a n00b I was coming into this. Firstly, I didn't even know what harem meant before I read Dosanko Gal, all I know it was the sexy jutsu technique from Naruto (harem no jutsu), but I digress.

Dosanko Gal has been an extremely pleasant read for me from the very first chapter, which was a surprise as someone who has read nothing but battle shonen and was particularly new to slice of life and romance. It's really the only manga I'm truly invested in currently. The setting is what got me hooked because I didn't know there was manga made about this region of Japan and it was nice learning about it. The artwork is one of a kind--the author managed the create the most attractive female characters I've ever seen (living up to its namesake) All the characters are likeable,

even the toxic parent whom most readers hated.

I'm not sure if this is true but I feel like me going into this series with a lack of experience with this genre probably helped me see it in a better light. Most discussion threads I've seen are 90% people who relentlessly chew this series out, comparing it to this and that and pointing out the tropes and clichés. Some do it quite nitpickingly while others make fair points. I do wish the author would put more Hokkaido spirit into this like his indirect competitor does in that Okinawan dialect manga. One thing that will never ever stop nagging me is how the style literally changes 3 times within the span of 40 chapters! It's as if the author was constantly forced to do redesigns. As much as I love this manga, I will agree it isn't without its faults, but it's been enjoyable enough these past 2 years to where I'm still first in line for every new update.

I kind of wish it would for on for a while even though many have said it's being dragged out. I honestly feel like we haven't truly been immersed in Hokkaido or gotten to know each characters daily lives especially the ones introduced later on. In the story the MC arrives in Hokkaido in January and it's currently the end of summer in the latest chapter so September, so just 8 months of in-story time? That definitely doesn't feel like enough with the way it's been progressing. For now it's bittersweet. 70% sweet/ 30% bitter.

I really liked the beginning. The romance was sweet, the art was breathtaking all in all it was just heartwarming. After the first rival it dropped in quality already but when the 2nd one came it got even worse. Also im not sure if its just me but the art got worse too after some time.

Its just a shame that it couldnt have been what it could, but i truly enjoyed the first chapters.
Its not like i have anything against harem but this just felt like too forced and unnatural.

I might scrim through later on but for now I will stop at chapter 57

It's nt as bad as people make it seem to be. It's generic but in a good way. Yeah the scenarios are cliché as usual but welp isn't tht the same for every other shoujo manga, so it stopped bothering me. It's a gd read over-all.

I can't believe I recommended this once

The oneshot was cute. The beginning of the serialization was cute. Not that much substance to it but it seemed like a nice slice-of-life rom-com about a guy who moved to a new town and had new experiences.

In the beginning I didn't mind the love rivals. Although it's a bit annoying, such tropes can often help the main characters characters come to terms with their feelings for each other.

Around chapter 30, I was already starting to lose interest in this series. Relationship progress between the two main characters was virtually 0, and it was beginning to feel like your generic cookie-cutter harem manga. I have no idea if the harem tag has always been there, but the series certainly lost its charm once the author leaned heavily on it. Still, I kept reading because at this point I was kind of invested in seeing how this all ended.

Ch. 30 spoilers:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I think everyone was hoping Fuyuki's announcement that she was "moving away to study abroad" was a good opportunity for Shiki to come out and tell her his feelings. Instead it turns out to be some contrived bullshit misunderstanding, Fuyuki is actually only going on a trip for two weeks, and it's painfully obvious that it's just a way for the author to have Shiki get closer with the other girls while she's away.

I was hoping this could just be written off as a poorly used trope by the author, but my god, the arc that comes up at chapter 44 is ridiculous. The author tried to pull a Loss.jpg-tier plot twist, attempting to add family drama for no reason, and failed just as (un)gracefully.

Ch.44-51 spoilers:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Now suddenly Shiki is the one leaving Hokkaido because his mother collapsed. Ok, let's see where this goes? Surprise, it goes absolutely nowhere! It turns out Shiki's mom is a manipulative, abusive POS who doesn't want him to stay in Hokkaido because she can't control him from there. She also wants to force him to marry one of the love rivals. How does Shiki get out of this, you ask? Fuyuki comes to visit Shiki's mom and through the forces of Deus Ex Machina convinces her to let him stay in Hokkaido. Oh, and the mom is moving to Hokkaido now too. Shiki is ok with this. I repeat, he's completely fine with his abusive mother coming to live with him. This arc was utter garbage and a complete failure on the part of the author in my opinion (and that of many others as far as I can tell).

As a final nitpick, I personally think the art quality has significantly dropped as well when compared to the beginning of the series. The faces now give me uncanny valley vibes when they didn't before.

I would love nothing more than to stop reading but with this latest chapter (60) it looks like the author is finally going to progress the main relationship, and I'm curious to see if he can pull it off or if it will just be deflection and interruptions as always. If there's no significant change within the next few chapters, I will be throwing this onto my unfinished list with reckless abandon.

Why did I write this much about a series I have nothing but disdain for at this point? So I can warn others about how the story quality has gone down the gutter. I rated it a 4 due to the wasted potential it could have had, but if not for the decent beginning and good character design it would have been much lower.

Update: Dropped at chapter 63 because the plot is dragging on to such a painful degree that I can't take it anymore. Maybe I'll skim the remaining chapters when it's finally done.

Honestly baffled at the '1s'.

This is a pretty good harem rom-com, with a focus on 'gyarus'. TBH, not sure I'd call any but the first a gyaru, but what do I know? The second is a gamer girl, with dark hair, 3rd is a short-haired half-foreign beauty. Judging by the naming jokes (MC is Shiki, 4 seasons, and each of the 3 girls are respectively Winter, Autumn, and Summer) I'm expecting a 4th. Note that I'm not caught up.

But anyway, it's pretty adorable, with no overtly annoying tropes. I'm entirely unsure why the other reviewer seems to think the MC has no personality, as he's actually pretty interesting. He's a nice guy, and actively works to broaden his horizons and try new things, as well as do his best at whatever he tries. He's also smart and hardworking, placing 3rd in his grade of like 170 or something. He plays piano, and has a rather traditional family that means he knows tea ceremony.

Also, while he's clearly inexperienced in love, as is literally everyone else, he clearly treats them as friends. He most certainly does have interactions with the female cast, so I'm actually questioning if the other reviewer even read the story. This guy is most certainly not a Yuuki Rito who blushes at everything.

Anyway, I'll admit that while the story isn't some masterpiece, nor super heavy on the drama, it's a very decent light-hearted rom-com. I can understand not liking the genre, but the large amount of '1s' for ratings makes no sense at all.
