Description

Hard To Find

Unfortunately, Hipira is one of those ones that has been published into English but found its way to very few store shelves. It's been in print in the US since 2005, but I'm willing to bet that your local book store didn't carry it because they didn't know if they should put it in the manga section or the children's section. [Despite being published by Dark Horse, it is completely a children's book.]

I picked this up purely because I am a dedicated fan of Katsuhiro Otomo's, and am also fond of Shinji Kimura's work in anime.
Chances are you will have heard of Hipira the same way. Unfortunately, Hipira is overlooked for many reasons. Firstly; its somewhat hard to locate. Secondly; it was squarely aimed at kids, and Dark Horse aren't really a kid's publisher in the first place (and I doubt Hipira found its way into many general bookstores).

Hipira is a simple collection of lavishly-illustrated stories revolving around the vampire town of Saruta. The protagonist is a young vampire named Hipira, and in these stories he usually befriends something new (such as a half-formed spirit), or causes a ruckus in town.
That's all there really is to it. DH went all out on production qualities though, that make up for its relatively short page count (40+). Its a nicelybound hardback, in a larger-than-A4 size, with commendable stock paper. The translation (by the always brilliant Kumar Sivasubramanian) does the job, although on odd ocassion it can be a little jarring.
If anything, its worth purchasing for the art alone. Kimura draws in a more refined version of Tim Burton's signature darkly quirky style, with some really gorgeous full-colour pencil illustrations that pack the page. Its really top-quality stuff.

So yeah, this is only worth checking out if you're an Otomo/Kimura fan, or appreciate well-illustrated children's books (I know I certainly do!)
