Robot Love Done Right
by Crowmanhunter

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
One of my biggest criticisms of Chobits and other similar robot wife themed manga is that Chi is a robot purely in name only. She doesn't look or act like a robot, and so it's EASY to empathize with the main character when he chooses to fall in love with her, because she's functionally no different than a very innocent and daft human.

Mina is different. She is truly a robot in every sense, and the author does not shy away from her very robotic features. Her face is a static metal plate. Her voice comes out of an audio speaker. Her metal hands are cold, and stiff. She doesn't pretend to have "feelings" at any point. She reiterates time and time again that she loves the main character because it is in her programing to do so.

And despite all of that, the author sucessfully makes us love her anyway. This is a true relationship between a man and a robot. It's very flawed, but also very heartfelt.

One of my favorite chapters is when the main character Takuma decides to form a relationship with Mina. His sister insists on coming over. In a panic, Takuma tries to hide Mina in a closet. But as he looks at her sitting in the closet, a sense of shame comes to him as he realizes what he was about to do. You stuff toys, furniture, THINGS, into a closet. He came to a conclusion that if he was serious about Mina, he needed to give her all the respect and consideration he would of any real relationship.

In a lesser manga, this would have been a generic chapter of comedic antics as a family member comes over and rummages through their things for the eventual gag reveal of the love interest. Instead, Mina and Takuma greet his sister head on, and have a direct, mature conversation about the nature of their relationship.

This manga is simultaneously heartfelt, warm, and endearing, somehow without feeling the need to shy away from or downplay the less appealing aspects of what it means to be with a robot. I highly recommend it.

Very cute and sweet

If you like fluffy stories with calm atmosphere and very minimal conflict, this one is for you! Don't be discouraged by other comments about fetish or wish fulfillment - every manga is a fantasy and you should be able to fantasised about the most outlandish things. What's the point of fiction if not exploring non reality?

A fetish and boring manga

It's clear that the mangaka has a thing for robots. And he keeps pounding the same idea by showing that love can transcend the normal and apply to ...well...an appliance.

In addition, the manga lacks a sense of direction. You can basically start from any chapter and you'll understand everything gng on. It's just that repetitive.

Basically, after the initial appeal of a relatively unique premise wears off, the repetitive nature of the manga will make u want to shoot yourself.

But maybe you'll like the slow pace. So a gave it a 5 instead of a 3.

So far, one of my current favourite mangas

I don't normally like to review incomplete scanlations (Chapter 29 as of this date), but I'm desperately in love with this work and sincerely doubt this will change with coming chapters. It's cute, heart warming and hilarious.

It starts out a little basic (the male lead was a little boring at first), as most manga does, but quickly ramps up with it's characters and story. It touches upon some sci-fi subjects too, particularly questions concerning AI within society and some philosophy. It's also particularly nice to have a non-futuristic setting that doesn't immediately cash in most robot tropes.

It's clear the mangaka understands the appeal of robots, with the female lead displaying both appearances and behavior that a robot enthusiast can enjoy; she's not a perfect recreation of a human. She has visible parts, an unmoving resin plate for a face, and mechanical personality. Later, a couple of other robots are introduced of different flavours too, including the "human-like android" type, and a non-anthropomorphic health monitor.

Maybe it's not the deepest or most serious work, but it's definitely a cut above most manga about robots, with a nice balance between the slice-of-life romance and non-futuristic sci-fi.

The blandest kind of wish-fulfillment

Really just uninteresting wish-fulfillment throughout.
The MC fails to give any kind of positive impression and is more just pathetic without even a hidden side of positive personality traits. The blandest self-insert kind of character with barely an identity outside of being boring and pathetic.
The girl, in this case a robot, is really just perfect in terms of the effort she puts in and what she does.
But it ends up feeling unearned and masterbatory when there is no feedback from the guy or sense of 'he deserves this for XYZ'.
