Description

Liked how it played out

Liked the story and the way things play out. Reactions of people around the MC when he first resists and then gives in to his feelings are good. His own realization that he has been play acting one role after the other is good to watch, until he has the epiphany that he was also playacting with the FMC and he should be honest. MC's daughter not forgiving him is also realistic even if I wanted a happy resolution to every arc. Good stuff.

A good manga for this premise

It's as realistic in its premise as this situation would ever be. I am happy to see the side-characters reacting to a high school girl-middle aged man relationship appropriately -- this is how it'd be in real life. ML's daughter was annoying at times and her arc was a little underdeveloped; you could infer and fill in the blanks fairly readily but seeing as she was around often enough, it would have been nice to get some of her story more fleshed out. The FL's home life saga, as well as the manga as a whole, peaked and resolved in a flash after much build up. There are still some loose threads that, again, you can infer and fill in the blanks for fairly readily but they still feel unresolved.

pacmanyo is right: the first half was great, but the second half lost it's footing. The build-up is riveting here, lots of tension and will-he-won't-he, but then the second half wanders for a bit, just to sprint to the finish line. Would have liked to have seen the tension from the first half stick around and I wish they hadn't had the stupid sexual assault scene -- makes no sense except for the hero to show up to save the day. The time could have been spent more productively with another character or with actual plot. It felt like filler.

I thought the ending was interesting -- despite it all, the author would have us think this is a grand story rather than a lot of misdirected and confused feeling, which is what the story clearly shows us. In a way it's sad how hopeful the ML is about his relationship with this girl. I think once the FL fixes her family/home issues, she's not going to need the ML as a crutch. Meanwhile, the ML has tanked his relationship with his daughter. I can't see them lasting despite the hopeful note of the ML. He just barely skirts through a lot of controversy like almost getting fired from his job and getting arrested for his conduct with a minor, but he doesn't seem to learn his lesson. I initially didn't like the end, but honestly, since I have to infer and fill in the blanks for so many other things, I might as well infer and fill in the blanks for their future as he ponders it: bleak.

On the verge of greatness..

Fairly realistic depiction of a depressed salaryman and confused teen with repressed emotions. Lots of strong feels in the first half, but starts to fall flat in the second half as it has many chapters which feel empty. They have barely any text and while art is pretty good overall it is not always capable of delivery the emotional impact experienced earlier in the series.

Good read if you're into realistic depictions of modern-day societal struggles and want to explore stigmatized topics.

Pretty sickening but I can't deny the good ideas

I finally know what to recommend to those people who keep asking me for something like Oyasumi Punpun, because these are the only two things I've read which make me feel sick and I've read a ton of edgy, gore and violent mangas.

I'd split this manga into two sub-thematics, but the general idea is about despair in my eyes. First, there's a salaryman whose wife is dead and his daughter is a shut-in who refuses to even talk to him. He leads an horrible life focused on a job he doesn't enjoy and which is tiring him out, and essentially he's getting targeted by his coworkers who are jealous and try to ruin his career. Any white collar worker would recognise the pain this guy must be feeling.

So how does he solve his problems? By getting manipulated into a toxic (and illegal) relationship with a minor. This works tries to focus on that, but this is where it fails because it ultimately doesn't give any sort of message. Is it trying to defend or criticise something? Hard to say. It does a good job at showing how desperate the protagonist is and how everything around him snowballs into an ever worse situation. The relationship he clings to, you can feel how bad it is for him and how it's not supposed to be a solution, neither for him nor the girl. You don't solve a teenage's family problems by dating them and you don't solve yours by entering into an illegal relationship which is going to bring downfall on your head the day you're caught.

It could have been just that, if it didn't seem to try to defend the idea that their relationship is legitimate. The heroine is essentially manipulative and toxic at first, but then she gets shown in too much of a good light which breaks the cohesion. The author wants to excuse her behaviour too much by showing that she has had an hard life too, I think he wanted to describe a father complex but that is never clearly explained as instead we see an unhealthy attachment to her mother and a "puppet complex". Then the protagonist's legal problems are somehow magically forgotten, and there's no proper conclusion of any sort anyhow, be it a bad or happy (them breaking apart and trying to repair their lives on their own) ending. I'm honestly disappointed all the societal problems were thrown aside, I think it would have been much more interesting than the rest of the manga and it fits into the idea of all the despair that had been shown throughout the manga, what better way to continue on the same thematic than having the protagonist faces the consequences of an illegal and immoral relationship?

It also has the same problem as Punpun: a lot if not all characters are absolute assholes/insane. I think that was not the intention of the author, but the protagonist's girl is shown as such a selfish person it is unbelievable how hard he tries to be a good father.

Trainwreck

It's like watching a trainwreck, everything slowly unravelling. I think it's a good manga, not sure how they'll end it though which will decide a lot.
