I know there's a thread that focuses on "Genres you dislike", so let me make this thread about genres/demographics you used to dislike but have grown to accept/adore. And why have you grown to like/read them?

For me, it would be:
-boy's love
-bara
-girl's love(yuri found in hentai, the cutesy wutsy type of yuri and the serious type of yuri)
-ero-guro
-josei
-seinen
-manga that can't be classified under demographics laugh
-hentai with plot
-slice-of-life (At first, I hated manga like this... then, BL kinda forced me to acknowledge this.)
-horror (oops forgot to include this)
-tragedy(also forgot to include this)
-mecha (oops forgot to include this)

Yes, for a long time, I would read nothing but shounen as well as hentai. And only a bit of shoujo. smile Then, I started to branch out into more interesting series... and later, I even forced myself to read things I normally wouldn't, to open up my mind. ^^;;

Another similar thread:
Genre(s) you used to like, but have grown to hate/dislike

Hmmm, I guess when I first started out it would be "Seinen" and "Horror." Now I love these genres.

Still having trouble accepting "Tragedy" but getting there.

Don't think I'll be able to accept "BL" and "GL" anytime soon. Make that never!! bigrazz

Ohh, interesting~! =D

Lets see...
Josei, Seinen~ Hmm, don't know why I never liked them, just never tried I guess...I was more into Shoujo/Shounen. But now I only read Seinen titles. .__.
Yaoi/BL- Disliked Yaoi mainly because of the fangirls and how most titles only consist of smut (something I still dislike <_<) but I do read it now and like it, there are some really good titles that have become my favorite manga. <3 I turn to Yaoi for Romance now, begone Shoujo~
Gender-bender- Still don't love it but I've grown to accept it. I just can't take any gender-benders seriously- but well, most are tagged with 'comedy' anyway.
Mecha- XD Dunno why I love it now...I've gotten into this mecha-phase just recently. @__@;;

Can't really say why I grew to like them, I think I just read some really good manga for each of these genres and thought it'd be interesting to try more. It was definitely worth it~ :3

Someone should make a, "Genres you used to like but have grown to hate" thread. >=D Or is there something like that already? >_>;;

Hentai, I guess? I still dislike a lot of them but I read some hentai manga that were OK. I even watch hentai anime (I know most of them are far worse on the whole compared with the variety of hentai manga) as long as it's not rape or violent. However, I do even like a couple of violent hentai anime when they are done well. At least I can have a laugh watching them. laugh

Ehm, probably Sports. O_O I avoided those back when I started manga, but now I like them too. Ack, I remember even disliking most Seinen in the very, very beginning! >__< Luckily that phase passed by quickly. XD

Mecha - Used to hate it; but after reading Bokurano, I realized that maybe it wasn't so bad. I still don't adore the genre, but I'll consider it if the story is interesting enough.

Sports - After discovering Real, I decided I'd read sports manga so long as the 'sports' part isn't the only focus (you know, where we happen to know something about what the characters do outside of the playing field), and it isn't over-long like Prince of Tennis / Slam Dunk etc.

Romance, shounen-ai, shoujo-ai - I used to filter these genre from all my searches; but I soon realized that I wouldn't find any manga to read for long if I was gonna be that specific. So I've now decided I can tolerate these three genre, so long as they don't kiss/hold hands and go "I love you darling, I'll never leave you" every two pages. laugh

As for hentai, smut, shotacon, lolicon, harem, reverse-harem, yaoi, yuri, ecchi and 'adult' manga- I will never ever even consider trying them, no matter how great the story-line. I can't stand porn! dead

I used to shy away from "serious" Seinen, but after reading Monster, I'm more willing to read these mangas in that form for genre.

It's not that there isn't any good Shoujo, but I still can't accept their way of telling a story. There are very few other genres that I have as hard a time comprehending/visually enjoying as standard-Shoujo. Interested in reading Angel Sanctuary, but I really don't see that happening.

Probably Gender Bender. I don't mind it as much anymore.

Ha! Mecha is good! laugh

I don't really have any, since I was an all rounder reader since the beggining, and the genres I don't like I still don't like.

Psychological manga, like Liar Game. Or plain creepy ones, like D.Grayman. Of course now I love those two, so it's all good. Still trying to rejuvenate my love of shoujo romance, but I always end up pairing the two main love interests (boys of course) together. biggrin

Understood that almost any genre can fill your stomach if you approach it right. (that probably would be fantasy, historical, shota, loli, hentai)

When I was younger I was kind of put off by shoujo-ai and yuri because I thought it was all fanservice for guys, but having discovered all the awesome shoujo and josei yuri out there it's now one of my favorite genres.
