When I search manga I look at the covers. Then the plot and then the whole art. But if I don`t like the art but like the plot most likely I won`t read it.

art is just a bonus, i read mostly for the story

if a manga has:

+art +plot= just perfect :3
-art +plot= great read ^^
+art -plot= never!!!!

Hmm..Well if it has both then thats great! If it has a great plot but bad art I might read it. It just depends on how bad the art is to me. If I hate the art I won't read it. I get tricked into reading things with good art and bad plots plenty of times, but they never last.

Well i would say if one day a want good story i would look fr it but some day i feel i want a great art and a super awesome story that about it when i feel like it but i try that most of the manga have good art except
Angel Densetsu is not shoujo it DOESN'T have a great art but the story for me is awesome and i kept reading it until the end.
And for a good art and great story i would say Skip beat
and Kimi ni Todoke are the best for me

Usually, I judge the cover page of a manga before trying it out. But if i hear such good reviews about the manga, I get past the cover and try it. I have a big dislike over 90s style manga, many manwhas (just because the bodies looked so unnatural/unattractive), and some mangas where maybe the heads/faces just didn't look right.

And of course, that gets in the way with enjoying the story, no matter how good the plot it. So, the art so sort of the base of how much i like the story. If there's not a good enough base, my appreciation is low.

Some mangas are like pieces of art, like Nakamura Asumiko's mangas. And other's are just cute or satisfactory.

I really enjoy mangas that have a really unique and memorable, simplistic art style, supported by a plot that matches the style of the art. Or maybe it isn't simple or too unique, but it matches the plot anyway(aka Yankee-kun to Megane-chan).

Well..mmm..aah ..I'm not a very big fan of shoujo [yaoi Maniac] and there is only a few that i love so much: Hana Kimi
Kawahara Kazune 's mangas and others but when it comes to it, I'd like the art to be perfect, and the plot to be not soo..cliched..and it has to be funny, to the point of tears. I second hana yori dango to have an interesting plot, but the same as the first post, i couldn't get past the first chapter or rather 4'page..it's just unbearable [no offence]

I am a little ashamed to say that the art is what initially grabs me when reading a manga. I like very beautiful, well drawn art work. I am sure that because I this I miss out on many excellent stories. For this bias I almost missed out on Nodame Cantabile, which is a terrific series.

Now that I have read so many, I am running out of options on what to read. Maybe I will try some of the manga I skipped out on before that have so-so art, but great plots. Any suggestions?

Well I do like art, but if the art is awesome and the plot is terrible..bye-bye. I mostly pick up manga by their art but if I heard the manga has a really great plotline but oldish/"bad" art, I'll still read it.
So, I guess I like both.

Plot is definitely more important to me. I don't care how beautiful the art is, if I can't stand the plot I can't read it. But I can get used to weird/ugly art with good plot.

However, when I'm browsing, it's usally the art that makes me take a closer look. bigrazz

Hmmm.
For me, it depends. But most of the time, it's good plot.
After all, a lot of shoujos have similar art, but I don't even attempt to read most of them. Why? Because the plot is disgustingly mundane.

Other times, I give good-looking art with mediocre art a chance, but only if I've read other works from the same manga-ka and liked it.

As others have said, it depends.

The art in Beauty Is the Beast, especially the amateurish-looking noses and lack of facial expressions, turns me off, but I still love the story, so it's one of my favorite shoujo mangas. Similarly, I would probably not be able to sit through I Wish..., Kimi wa Pet, Kodomo no Omocha, Red River, or Shiawase Kissa Sanchoume if the stories weren't good, but they are, so at some point I stopped caring about the art.

On the other hand, the art is The Bride of the Water God is beautiful and atmospheric, so despite the slightly melodramatic plot, I'm willing to be washed away into that dream world and fantasize for a few moments about moonlit water lily ponds. I also go easy on Yumeka Sumomo and CLAMP because of their art, although sometimes their storylines are lacking something.

The only manga that really frustrates me art-wise is Honey and Clover. The art is interesting and lovely at times, but it's also so cluttered and sketchy that my brain starts to shut down while trying to process it. I haven't read much of the manga because this clutter problem. The anime is good, though, so I know there's a good story in there somewhere.

I personally much prefer the art of Honey and Clover to Bride of the Water God. The latter's art hurts my eyes like a lot of Korean shoujo art styles do. dead

Sangatsu no Lion = <<<333 It has a good story and art. I wouldn't say pretty but makes my eyes comfortable.

I can tolerate a lot of art styles as long as they don't make the characters look weird, have ridiculously long and thin limbs and bodies, sharp faces and huge eyes, even if their backgrounds are not that great and panels messy at times. Usually story > art to me.

I think we have different ideas about what constitutes good and bad art. I personally don't prefer any particular style as long as it is distinctive (and I do think Umino Chika's style is distinctive), so it doesn't matter how realistic the character designs or backgrounds are, whether it's in manga or manhwa or manhua style, or whether the art gives off a particular feeling (e.g, clean and orderly vs. sprawling and dreamy, or gritty vs. bubblegum). The only things that tend to throw me off are extremely wispy lines and lots of little panels and text bubbles on one page, which are physically hard on my eyes. Obviously, we're not going to come to any resolution on this -- to me, Sangatsu no Lion is very pretty, but difficult on the eyes. That's exactly the opposite of your assessment. eek

@Odette
I agree that's one drawback of Umino's art. But I can still tolerate it as long as I like the story. However, the art styles of Bride of the Water God, Model, Saver, the Summit, etc and a lot of huge-eyed, long-limbed medicore manga shoujo art totally put me off. I don't really mind how distinctive an art style is. Character design shouldn't be too ridiculous to me.

good art can carry a bad story and a good story can carry a bad plot but mediocrity is still mediocrity.
