Don't think there's anything I could be embarrassed for.

I used to be when I was a kid. What irony.

I think I actually am ebaressed. I'm 19 and I'm not talking about letting know my friends here. I trust my friends and they know I like manga, anyway. Some of them are reading manga or watching anime, but that's only a few. But when it comes to strangers or people I meet for the first time I wouldn't want them to know unless we've made friends with each other. Usually, I'm not moving in circles that read manga, so it's a rather unusual hobby and that's why I wouldn't rub someones nose in my hobby.
I think most people think mangas are something for children and in my country the people mostly associate manga with hentai, ecchi etc. so they would think I'm a pervert (that's another argument for me not to go around and tell anyone immediately) and when I try to explain what mangas really are like (and I've tried ths veeery often) they wouldn't understand or believe me. Instead, the would say: "but in the commercial for these handy-pictures I saw this and that and on the TV they only show Naruto, One Piece and so on, which I would consider to be for kids" or something like that. I wouldn't read manga in the public, too, due to these reasons. I think that's a pity because there are so many genres of manga and they are not only for children, but I'm glad I can at least trust my friends with this.

Depends on the friend. I have friends who are extremely prejudiced towards manga and friends who couldn't care less and friends that share my interest. I don't think I'd ever be able to admit to the friends who are prejudiced against it that I read manga, nor do I even want to. It's simply something that we don't share. Instead we share other interests.

Pretty much all my friends know I love manga. However, the friends I have who are disgusted with manga do not know the extent of how much I read/like it.
*reminds me of a time when one of my friends said I wasn't much of an anime fan. That view changed quickly when she was told to look in my room laugh *

On the other hand...the friends that know I also read BL are only a couple good friends roll eyes

Well where i live,
manga/anime is like a taboo,
you you read it in public, or where anyone can see you,
your like an outcast..
unless your asian, then its like accepted.

Its the truth dead
Very sad one.

They all know I read manga, but not the extent nor type. The one time I had a friend read Parasyte (which is relatively tame compared to most of the stuff I read) She said to me upon completion "Dang, you're more disturbed then I thought!" True, she said it jokingly, but there was this worried undertone and we were never as close after that. Since then, I only reveal the manga I read that are non-violent.

i practically broadcast that im an omnivore manga addict, and have proudly proclaimed getting tears and/or laughing so hard i nearly pee myself in everything from shoujo to seinen. In highschool i used to read manga/watch anime in the middle of class.... Though i belonged to the stoner crowd at the time.... we cared very very VERY little about the opinions other had of us, and would rectify any excessive insults with over the top aggression and/or physical violence... so i never really had an issue admitting it at any point.

middle school me to 6-8 people i dont remember "Dragon Ball Z is 10 times as mature, and much better, than any of that retarded crap on mtv"(may have made some mistakes in the overall composition as it was a long time ago... lost me the chance of quite a few friends that i would never want [aka nothing])

(also im aware the violent responses were very immature, but if you want to comment on so please direct yourself to the part that basically says the amount of care i have towards your opinion is lower than anyone else in existence.... even people who would gladly murder you would find your statements of more priority than me... figured i would get this understood before i started getting preached to)

ps.
@MySwirl i fully agree with the naruto part, but op is aimed more towards teens+ once you get to the later eps... the crap with ace would probably permanently scar lots of kids(mainly because the amount of buildup is insanely huge for such a complete failure... not to mention how fast it hits.... kids would bawl their eyes out xD)

I'm not embarrassed but I don't tell everyone I meet that I read manga. I have no one I can talk to about it and when I do, they just seem so uninterested so I'm just like FOREVER ALONE!.

If someone were to ask me what I like to do in my spare time then yeah, I'll mention manga but that would be it.
