One of the guys in my study abroad group actually had his host father strip down in front of him and show him how to take a bath in their bathroom when he couldn't understand what they were trying to explain to him. Incidentally the mother and daughter were there too and laughing their asses off at the father.

Are people actually bullied because their hair is a different color, as in not black or shades of brown?

I wanna know this too since this question has passed across my mind many times. is it really happening? all this bullying stuff just because of differences in appearances and such? what are teachers or parents doing to prevent such actions? I mean, Jesus, if it is true then little kids are getting hurt for stupid reasons and no one helps them! even teachers and school... it is scary... dead

I want to know that too...

And do school kids really need to change their shoes at school?

Yeah if anybody knows the answer to that I'd like to know too, do they really change to indoor shoes at school? I can understand at home but at school just doesnt make sense to me..

Big school->indoor shoes->less work for the cleaning workers (specially in rainy days). Easy.

In america they don't.... well maybe in the Private Schools, but public schools don't have uniforms or changing of shoes.

I went to 3 private school through out my school years and none of them required that we take our shoes off, one of those private schools was a catholic school

We only took our shoes off (did not change to other shoes) in elementary school when we entered the class room. (Europe.)

Way to let everybody down. On a related note, could it be possible that you just didn't see any due to it being summer and stocking or leggings being relatively warm?

Yeah around here our school campuses are open to the environment so keeping the hallway clean would be somewhat pointless.

I've never heard of a US school where students have to change their shoes. If there are any schools that require students to change shoes it's either new, or only a few schools, or both.

The socks are actually an early-mid-nineties phenomenon. They're still around, but not nearly as widespread. If one were to go outside of Tokyo there would probably be more- the rest of the country tends to, culturally speaking, be a couple years behind due to availability.

You mean its due Tokyo's tendency to exagerate and overuse trends led to them not being worn anymore save for in anime? Well that's a damn shame. no

No, no, I mean, they're still a fashionable commodity, but you have to understand that it was originally a kogal thing that just became more widespread. Fashion cycles in Tokyo move remarkably quickly- a lot of the stereotypes that we talk about in this thread are several years out of tune with reality. Ganguro, for instance, is now several generations more developed. I think the current terminology is some offshoot of yamanba, but I'm not really sure- this information is all collected from a couple articles I read for a class, it's not really my area of expertise.

The best way to put it is probably that Tokyo sets a trend, and the rest of the country slowly assimilates it. By the time it's all over it's probably out of style in Tokyo.

I get it. I get it. Los Angeles has a similar effect. I lived there for a year when I was younger. Then when I moved back to my old town, the trends seemed to follow us. Like everyone was just barely adapting to this thing when it was already thriving back in LA.

I want to know if people there are bullied as much as manga/ anime shows, or is that just an excuse for the main character to be a hero, you know? Cause I've never seen anyone beaten up for money in American schools.
