Not that I personally find much cause to randomly use Japanese words when English equivalents are available...but what's up with all you people complaining about mixing languages? How the hell do you think we got modern English?? Taking words from other languages is TRADITION for the English-speaking world.

It's not the fact that we are integrating it smoothly into English, but people who tend to use these words will emphasize it. These people tend to be "otaku" and provide a bad name for the rest of us. It's SUPER EMBARRASSING FOR EVERYONE!

If you have to force it/think about it, then there's no point.
Like when ANYONE forces ANYTHING. It just comes off fake and make you look bad.

as some people said in this thread before, i do wonder how many of you use "manga"?

as for me, i won't use any japanese words as long as it has an english or turkish equivalent and even if i wanted to use them i don't even much words anyway. only names of some genres and some anime/manga related words (like uke-seme).

It is actually called Dorama. It's to differentiate just regular Dramas from Japanese dramas. There's nothing wrong with saying Dorama when you're referring to a Japanese drama.

I'm just saying. That I should not have to get strange looks from people when I tell them I go to conventions and I read manga. I get stereotyped.

Saying "Sankyu!" instead of thank you.
Saying "Nyan!" (no explanation)
Saying "Bob-kun!"
Of even "Arigatou for the book you lent me!"

It's embarrassing. It really is. Because when I tell people I read manga they assume I'm like that.
I'd love to see these people go to Japan and pull that shit off.

If you can't speak the language fairly fluently don't sporadically add random words you've picked up into your everyday language.

Words like manga. That's what it is. How could you not call it manga? Just how we don't have words for Souffle or Avant-Garde or Chaise Longue . That's just how it is.

So YOU'RE insecure about it. That makes more sense than saying everybody is insecure about it. As far as people judging you, maybe if you didn't open conversations with "I like manga" they might not be so likely to judge you for it. If you already know these people, they'll probably won't have to make assumptions about your character. And frankly, if you're including that you like manga in your introduction, it's only natural that people might think you're obsessed. You've made it clear that's what you want them to associate with you in your first meeting.


So, sometimes it's okay and sometimes it isn't. How methodical. What a great system you've made. You're really proving that you're the type of rational person that should be guiding the development of language.

If you're wondering what else I could call manga, I find comic works fine. It's even more informative to people unfamiliar with the term manga.

And even if it isn't the first thing they find out about me there are still judgments when they eventually find out.

And of course it's sometimes okay and other times not.

But Manga is not a comic. It's like calling a CD a cassette. It just... isn't.
You wouldn't call a comic book a manga.

I also love how you completely skipped over the part of talking like that in Japan.
So really. If you went around talking like that in Japan how do you think you would be treated?

It can also be seen as learning. People do use this method to try to actually learn to speak the language, mind you. Even with your original statement I honestly don't see how that can be offensive...

Anyway, no, I don't use Japanese words in my sentences irl, online may be different because of all the Japanese words associated with manga, so yeah. I don't really care if other people use it in their sentences either. I often add Korean and Spanish words when talking out of habit as well. It's hard to not do it actually...3':

First let me say i am not an otaku or anything of the sort. just a normal person that happens to like manga and even anime. as far as i know no one i know thinks im 'wierd' or assumes a personality for me because i like manga

Among my friends that know im taking japanese yes i occasionally try to use some of the vocabulary that i've learned or to even spit out a sentence as practice but in the end they just dont remember any of the words i try to repeat around them lol. So i guess i do that for my own satisfaction. Its frustrating sometimes because i want to practice the japanese that i have been learning but i have no one to practice speaking with outside of class At least i think most of them have figured out 'arigatou' jeje

Also my family occasionally listens to me telling them some of the new vocab that i've learned or something interesting about their culture that i've learned as well.

So yes i do use it in real life but not a crazy amount just sometimes i know my friends/family have no problems with my interests even if they aren't interested lol

(as for online i may have once put in a japanese word but in the end i just dont do it because it doesn't seem right... i dont know im wierd like that. As for other ppl putting japanese in their posts i actually really like, especially when i recognize the word)

by the way i have no problem calling a manga 'comic' or even 'graphic novel' although they are not the same they are in the same category, so i dont see a need to be fussy over it. I do usually specify that its manga but ppl can call it whatever they want. At least thats how i feel about it

You do know that many Japanese people think it's cool to throw the occasional english word into their sentence, right? It's basically the same thing, except they do it more. So if they are getting annoyed, that'd just make them hypocrites.


It's not like calling a CD a cassette. It's more like calling a CD a data storage device. Accurate and less specific. So while I wouldn't call a comic book a manga, that's like saying I wouldn't call a fish a salmon. Sometimes it isn't the case, so it makes no sense, but other times it's completely accurate.

They are absolutely different.
Seriously.

CD and Cassette's both play music. But they come in different packaging and quality.
Comic books and Manga both have pictures. That's it.

Comic books have a unique drawing style.
Comic books are typically smaller. (in pages)
Comic books have a different target market.
Comic books cost less then manga. (I'm not talking about crazy collectors editions)
Comic books usually concentrate on different subjects.
Comic books are usually in colour.

There is no way you can call them the same thing. That's like calling a comic book a picture book for kids.
