It depends. I read a lot of one volume series, and with those I can generally tell before getting halfway through the first chapter. But you can also have a series that you like in the beginning, but then because of how the plot develops in the later chapters or volumes, you end up disliking it.

"Never, I always need multiple chapters" I would've dropped Naruto and a great many other now favorite manga if I judged them by the first.

Yes, well said. For me actually, there is neither "good" nor "bad" series. There is only series I like, series I don't like and series I have yet to try out.
