I can't remember the gay teen book I read (maybe possiblely or something like that...) but that left me depressed...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Because he doesn't get together with anyone in the end. Although the author hints towards it, it never happens.

Also, Brokeback Mountain (movie) left me feeling SUPER depressed...
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Because the guy's lover gets killed in the end! I felt like crying.

I tried reading Luck in the Shadows. It seemed interesting, it was definantly my kind of fantasy... I just didn't have the time to read it. I'll have to try again later. I did read Magic's Pawn by Mercedes Lackey, which was good. A 3 book series with a gay main character.

My only problem with some gay romances besides being uber depressing is when one of the men start acting like a woman. Or is basically a woman with a (man's parts) and a man's name. That bothers me to no end! I get that kinda romance from straight novels, I don't need it from gay ones too. I want a real gay romance. That means two men that act like men.

Also, Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series (1st book is Moon Called) is a great series, and although the main theme isn't gay, it has a gay werewolf in it. Him and his partner are awesome. eyes I love them.

your kind of novel:

Bill: Hey man, listen I, uh, I think you're awesome
Bob: Uh...thanks? What the hell is wrong with you, spit it out

Bill: I like you, in a gay way
Bob: Oh, well *punch in the face* AHAHa FAG!!!

Bill: Ough, ouch what the F4ck is wrong with you?!?
Bob:I knew you were a fag, now that you came out, I can beat the crap out of you with legitimate reasons. -stick hits Bill's face-

Bill: -cough-
Bob:-Steps on Bills face, spits on it, and walks away-

Oh wow, I'm violent....lol eek

hey don't laugh, i can write good gay novel, and not this violent...ok, even more violent.

Quote from Serian
A gay romance book I really enjoyed is "Bound By Nature" by Cooper Davis. Some lovely and sweet sex and a tragic but still romantic note. I read it because of this review: http://tayend.livejournal.com

I'm half way through, but it's really too much words lol......I still have no idea what the main plot is right now...

Ok I'm done, I think they focused a little too much on the description of sex and emotion....that the plot is a little too thin.

Gay novels? Oh yeah, I pop those things like candy. However, because I am an immature tweenage girl at heart, I tend to read the youth targeted books. I've read a quite a few and one of the trends I've noticed is for gay themed books to have bittersweet/tragic endings. Sometimes these work well but other times it's like 'so. . . what the heck? This is such a fish out of water ending'.

Anyway, here are the ones I've read:

~Everything Alex Sanchez has written. Yes, everything.
~Most of what David Levithan has written except what he's contributed to short story books.
~Absolutely, Positively Not
~Freak Show (good trashy fun, but I hate admitting I like the book)
~Hero (really reccomended, I thought it was beautifully written)
~Not(thing) Pink (I can't remember the exact title)
~Roots
~St. Augistine (Still not sure of the title)
~The Blue Lawn
~My Father's Scar
~Baby Be-bop
~The Rainbow Kite
~One of Those Hideous Books Where the Mother Dies
~The Order of the Poison Oak
~The Center of the World (also extremely beautiful, go read this book)
~A Really Nice Prom Mess
~Tale of Two Summers
~Another Kind of Cowboy
~My Most Excellent Year
~The Last Exit to Normal
~The Traitor Game
~Two parties; One Tux

Oh, look, a list post. Like I said, I zoom through those things. And yes, they are all YA books, don't judge me.

Perks of Being a Wallflower isn't necessarily gay-themed, but it has a gay subplot going on. I recommend it either way. (:

I believe the Rainbow Kite is, Freak Show is set in Bible Belt Florida so that counts as well, and Not(thing) Pink may or may not be set in the south. The others have undetermined settings mostly. I'm interested in that kind of setting as well, does anyone have any suggestions?

Amazon didn't have a description and I didn't read all of the first post. But I'll check around to see if my library has it, I'm always looking for a new book.

Here's an online version in pdf: http://www.4shared.com/document/jGT9fluS/Jim_Grimsley_-_D ream_Boy.html

and movie too:
http://www.watchthisletme.com/watch-23088-Dream-Boy

As you can see a 4.5 out of 5 stars from 171 reviews mean it's a pretty damn good book. I read most of it, and I have to say it is. There's also a movie based on it, which is fairly accurate but short.

Summary:

Gay teen romance about two high school students, Nathan a quite shy young boy and Roy an older boy whose popular among the school body. They are in the same school. Now Roy drives the school bus and then go to school so he sees Nathan first and last every day. He befriends Nathan and they started getting close after Nathan tutors Roy in English essay. They have some intimate scenes and the novel keep telling us about Nathan's distant mother and father.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Later we found out Nathan was constantly sexually molested and raped by his drunk father. And when Nathan and Roy were intimate, Nathan made moves that made Roy suspicious. Roy questions Nathan where Nathan learned to do all this and became angry.

During one night Nathan ties a string at the door of his bed room and in the middle of his sleep, his dad trips on the string. Nathan then rushes out the door and decided to spent the reminder of this nights in the grave yard where Roy and him hanged out.

One night Roy finds Nathan and offers Nathan a place to sleep in Roy's barn house. Thus their relationship mends and Roy no longer question Nathan about the details. Roy decides to take Nathan on a camping trip to a haunted house with Roy's other two friend. One of Roy's friend is Randy, a chubby kid. The other friend is Burke, a strong muscular and hairy guy who once beat up an ex marine.

While visiting the abandoned haunted house, Randy and Burke catches Nathan getting oral from Roy. Roy leaves embarrassed and leaves Nathan alone. Later Burke knocks out Nathan, carries him to the top floor where he beats Nathan and force Nathan to give him oral Later Burke rapes Nathan, and Nathan remembers the same way his dad treated him through out the years. After Burke finishes, Burke strikes Nathan twice on the head with a chair handle.

Nathan feels his heat crack open and starts to bleed and faint. Now, from Nathan's perspective Roy stands over his body, crying. The rest is a little blurry as whether it was Nathan's imagination or Roy's imagination or divine intervention or actual event, but Nathan comes back to life after the funeral ceremony and Roy sees Nathan in the forest. Roy runs towards Nathan and they escape into the forest. They rests near each other until the leaves bury them in half. And Roy says they should head North and never come back.

From my own perspective on this ending:
Spoiler (highlight to view)
So I think Nathan didn't die, he was just wounded really badly. He later recovers a bit and had enough energy to walk out of the crime scene and see Roy. In the book, while embracing in the last scene, Roy sees fresh blood on Nathan's head, meaning Nathan is slowly dying. So at the end, Nathan says he will rest on the floor for a while and they embrace each other and watch the leaves fall. Obvious to me that Nathan died now, really. And Roy who knows.

Alright, So I finished Counterfeit Son....it was pretty intense, the ending was lame but 90 % of it is pure raw emotion. I recommend it. Not a gay themed book. More of a suspense teen genre about the after-effects of sexual abuse.

I also just finished Luck in the Shadows, pretty good. That's only vol. 1 in the series.

Here I provide the Vol 2 of the series called Stalking Darkness.

Again, pdf, txt, rtf, epub, lit, lrf, mobi file

Jim Grimsley is a pretty good author, but Winter Birds was about 20 times better than Dream Boy. Maybe the effect of Dream Boy was lessened for me by the fact I read it on a car ride and kept getting distracted. (Though if it was really interesting enough for me, I probably wouldn't have gotten distracted from it.)

The truth is I hardly ever read/finish gay fiction since it is so rarely well done. But one I'd suggest that is worth mentioning is As Meat Loves Salt. It's not your typical "gay romance" but whatever.

I did recently buy The City and the Pillar, which I have heard many good things about, so hopefully it wont be disappointing.

Why do I always read violent books.... -_-

really? I have to try it now. I'll updates if I find a download link for a free ebook on this. eek

I finished half of Stalking Darkness.....

I have a question to the people who read this book....did Alec lose his virginity to that seducing sorceress? It seems they had sex and she did something to him afterward. I'm a bit uncomfortable about this since:

1. It's not consensual, this is equivalent of putting drugs or alcohol in someone and then persuade them into having sex, which is illegal by the way. Sex under the influence of drugs is illegal.
2. I really rather see Alec lose his virginity to Seregil....I mean....Alec is like keeping himself away from woman a whole book and a half and then he loses it so......lightly as if it meant nothing. If his virginity meant nothing, why the hell is he so uptight about it anyway...
3. Why the hell does fantasy novels always have a random ass sex scene....like I think this is the 5th fantasy book I read that the main character was a young virgin and then seduced by a sorceress into losing his virginity...Why do fantasy writers feel the need for female rapists in their book.....it's kind of disturbing...
4. I still personally don't think Alec lost his virginity because The old wizard, Naysander or what ever, said there was no sexual magic but some other magic roll eyes

Is the second volume..the book of sex? Vol. 1 had no sex at all, and vol 2 just exploded with sex, prostitutes, and all kind of naughty stuff... laugh I don't understand the way this author made the novel progress...I mean vol.1 and 2 seem so different regarding sexuality..... suddenly, visiting prostitutes has become a past-time hobby for Alec...... confused

@BoxBox -

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean! Book 1 was so good that I finished the whole thing in one day. I liked Alec and felt that he'd be one of those rare decent young men who actually bothers to take his time with the sex stuff...and then he just goes and makes out with that sorceress and even has the audacity to say it felt good?! I mean, I've seen plenty of guys like that in fiction, but it is utterly incompatible with Alec's character and the way it was built up throughout book 1. And seriously...he's sleeping with a woman one moment, and getting all excited when Seregil touched his shoulder the next? What the hell did the author do to the shy, awkward, sexually-clueless Alec of the early days confused
Frankly put, it's ridiculous! I've had volumes 3 - 5 of Nightrunner on my computer for months, but I was so disappointed with the 2nd volume that I now can't work up the energy to read on...

Oh - and about your questions; I can't say for sure that Alec lost his virginity to the enchantress, but I get the feeling he did. Maybe Lynn Flewelling thought that it'd be better to let him have a little 'experience' before moving him onto Seregil. I don't particularly oppose the idea of a female rapist (first time I've come across one, myself), but I really hope that her seducing Alec had some kind of ulterior motive besides being just for the heck of it - at least that'll make it seem less silly and more...necessary.

I read many books of Anne Rices "The Vampire Chronicles"

I liked Vampire Lestat (prequel to Interview).

It has gay and incestuous subtext to it.

It was interesting to say the least. I am hetero, but liked Queen of the Damned (the closest I can remember in the series to man/woman romance) the least.

Apart from that, the only gay literature/movies I've seen were porn. One of my roommates was gay, and I frequently watched his videos with my other roommate (straight) while eating/brushing/resting.

Now that I think about it, it does seem a bit odd.
