Meh, she was pretty much the stereotypical girl pre-time-skip. Sure, Ino and Hinata aren't going far from the "standard" girl character, either, but at least they had a special power. All Sakura had was chakra control; her taijutsu was extremely lacking, and I can't recall her ever using any difficult ninjutsu (then again, I haven't watched/read those arcs in a year or so...).

I think most people hate(d) her because she was supposed to be a major character, or that is at least assumed by the fact that she is in the same team as Sasuke and Naruto (both main characters). However, pre-time-skip Sakura was just mediocre, and her fangirlishness was more and more obvious thanks to her large amount of screen-time. (I think people would've really started to dislike Ino if she was on team seven and not Sakura.) Because of her lack of strength/ability, fangirl-tendencies, and the fact her character is the stereotype of the helpless girl, she just grew to be more and more annoying as the series went on.

I like her in Shippuuden/post-time-skip, though. She actually has talent and strength, and her intelligence is actually represented. And the fact that Sasuke isn't around anymore really cuts down on the annoyingness of her "ZOMG SASUKE!"-ness.

I never really hated Sakura, though. She was annoying, but it wasn't to the hatred level. She was kinda like a fly: annoying, but not enough of an issue to start freaking out about. Like others have said, she never really contributed anything to the show, so I couldn't really hate her for it.

at first i didn't like sakura because she was mean to naruto and too soft but when she got older i realized that she matured, she's very strong and i respect that.

She was developed to be disliked from the beginning but like all long time manga should do, she has developed more and grown up a little.

I've never hated her, she's was just a girl. Now I think she is an important team member - medical jutsu. She is not a favourite though.

I wouldn't say I hate her, but I definitely don't like her either. I get annoyed at every stupid thing she does, which is almost all the time.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I hate her stupid fake confession to Naruto and her stupidity at thinking that she could beat Sasuke alone...and other random things
I'm pretty sure she was useful at some point but I can't think of anything right now. Anyways I just don't think she really helps much or adds anything special to the story.

I never really hated her but she never really stood out as a character. I just wish she would do something substantial more often. She was really cool fighting the puppet master in the Akatsuki and when she went after Sasuke (for a brief moment) but she kind of fades into the background. Hell the majority of the time she is not in the plot with Naruto its like she has been relegated to recurring character with the rest of her generation of ninjas. She needs another moment where she kicks some butt and is not all emotional.

I almost prefer her in the original Naruto because she at least contributed to the rivalry between Naruto and Sasuke and had a msall role in the plot.

I wouldn't even mind her continuing as she is if she was involved in Naruto's mission and activities more. She should be on missions with him and using her medical ninjutsu to help Naruto in his missions, even just boosting his strength or as moral support.

For a main character...really she is useless.

FYI her hair adds some character and references her name. It's an anime people and anime is known for two things to most people: 1. Crazy hair 2. crazy hair colours.

I think feminists should hate Sakura, because she just set their movement back 100 years. That's better than Turn Back The Pendulum.

It'd be nice to have a female protagonist that forswears all men, just for once. I mean, it's good and normal for her to idolize someone (females usually do), but after 400 chapters of SakuraXSasuke, you'd be expecting a breather.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Then came SakuraXNaruto.

I started disliking her when Naruto became in Shippuden. She was better in the first season. Even if she still had her mean personality, (she still does).

It's interesting looking at the responses to this thread when it was first created in 2008, and the responses now. I think post-timeskip, and pre-fake confession, many of us had a little bit of hope for her character. Now most of that hope has faded. I find it dismaying how she continually messes up and then afterward repeats the same "from now on, I'm going to be stronger!" speech. She's cried wolf one too many times--it's impossible to believe her anymore. But aside from her personality defects, I think the real problem with Sakura is this:

Quote from MajorMarmot
But the real reason why I reaaaally dislike that character is because she is supposed to have a leading role, she's one of the 3 principal characters (and we have seen how much Sasuke has done) and she has never given anything to the story. Nothing.

She doesn't have a story, family or linage; a problem that she needs to solve or a personal goal that is not directly related to other character (chasing after Sasuke only makes stronger Sasuke's plot line); she doesn't have an adversary or decent rival to defeat.

I wouldn't mind Sakura's flaws if she was interesting in some other way. But she's not. When you consider the backstory every other character has in this series, Sakura's is just pitiful. Ino/Shika/Cho have generations of teamwork. Naruto/Sasuke/Gaara/Neji have tragedy. Sakura has a family we know nothing about and a childhood filled with teasing ...because of her forehead. (Even as a slice of life shoujo heroine that backstory wouldn't cut it.)

As MajorMarmot said, there's no Sakura-only storyline. I think it would have been cool if she were still a trainee medic nin and we got to occasionally watch her trying to learn a new jutsu or something. (I don't mean chapters and chapters of this, I mean a few pages here and there.) Watching her struggle to achieve something would make her more sympathetic and easier to relate to. But all that training was over and done with when the timeskip started. (I almost get the impression Kishimoto finds her boring and doesn't want to bother with her a lot of the time.)

Well, I don't want to write a novel, so I'll say in summary: a bad personality + poor character development makes Sakura one of my least favorite characters in Naruto.

Omg everything that majormarmot said and soo much more. In the early episodes, she had the loudest bark and the smallest bite. Always giving orders and also the damsel in distress. I mean who cried more than sakura in narato? hmmmmmm i guess it would be sakura. Oh and dont get me started on annoying and whinny, I mean she stop being annoying when they grew up but it was toned down.
However, I got to say, her skills and training came through with her when she fought sasori. She was amazing and hard working but it just dwindle down ffrom there because after that she just relied on naruto after that and after that and after that and to top it off she started with the annoying crying again.

I mean hinata was weak and cried to when she was younger, but in the shippudden episode, you would not find 1 episode with her crying and plus hinata always try! never waitng for someone to rescue her.
I can go on and on about sakura but it will take all night!! I mean if she would die in the later episodes no one would miss her because she left behind no trademark, no encouragement and definally no bravery!

no

Everyone's reason for disliking her seems valid. I personally don't dislike her. And I enjoy her growing up in Shippuuden. But the way I see it, she has no back story because what we read about her is her back story.

Maybe she was made just to hate, which is cool. And maybe she's just suppose to see her as a normal character despite being 1 of 3 main characters (that actually pisses me off a bit). But think about it. Take away the action, unrealistic events, the fact that they are ninjas, and you have a coming of age story. She has no back story because we are reading it. Her original typical girl like personally, and changing from a weak genin who would be better off gone to a capable Chunin who's life is taking off. She went from being a huge hindrance to a minor one. She gained crazy strength, is helluva smart (despite some of more stupid action which I can't defend), and a DAMN good medical ninja.

I think Sakura is dealing with (ninja) life as we know it and is just trying to find herself and be relevant. People forget that Naruto isn't just and action anime/manga put a coming of age in a lesser degree. I won't be surprised if and when the manga ends we find the story has been told through her. But that idea is far fetched at best.

People probably hate her because she just that, a normal coming of age character. And they don't feel like those characters belong here.
