Edit: I just checked and there are NOT MORE deadlineless ones

Swegg, make sure it's one that has no deadline.

On the config screen, click the "advanced" tab and go to the bottom. Change the "no preference" to "deadlineless"

anybody having any trouble with the mac version? It's installed but I don't have any options like signing up for a name or a team.

I might just give up and install it on my windows partition....

At the spot where you enter your nickname or alias. Below that is where you enter a team number. After you complete a work unit, your nickname apparently appears on the team list. You don't have to sign up for a team or anything. Just complete a WU under the team number 79419. Lambchopsil is going put a link here to show who is on the list once someone is on it. So far noone is yet.

I heard I think about a month back that the Mac version gives the user no notification for what it is doing, you can't even tell the thing is even on...

HEY DAED check out this: http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html
The settings for folding@home are hidden in apple menu-> system preferences -> Other-> Folding@Home

I downloaded the console version since I have a modem/dial-up connection ... already I am getting Error:Attempt# to get work failed, and no other work to do

I don't understand you at all ladybrasa. Where did you get the idea that the "console version" means "for dial-up users"?
First of all, it doesn't matter if you have a high speed internet connection or dial-up since the program works off of your unused CPU cycles not your internet speed.
Secondly, "console version" refers to the software's configuration portion. This version is best suited for advanced users, since it doesn't even have an installer because the configuration is done through a console application, like DOS (hence the name). A novice should use the graphical version since, as the name suggest, it has an installer and all the process is done through a graphical interface.

The man is right ladybrasa, I just looked at the installation instructions for that version (also on link above), and it uses such delightful gibberish as:
mkdir ~/Library/Folding@Home
cd ~/Library/Folding@Home
curl -O
tar xzf FAH_SMP_OSX.tgz

Run away! Quickly! laugh

I'd imagine, my Folding is set to pause when the computer is unplugged. Hope some people don't get any nasty surprises...

cool thing!

There are a few similar projects, since i am a meteorologist i would probably contribute to the one running long term climate forecast ensembles, but protein folding souns good. Since my computer is always suffering from overworking and i don't leave it on while i am not on it i won't join in the united baka updates effort, but it is a very cool idea. Maybe when i get that new computer that has been luking behind the horizon for the past year,
good going lamb

LOL: I just checked the rank on of the team, so far one WU processed, hurray for drunkdecoy

NeoFireHawk & SirGir,
I am merely following the suggestion of the Stanford site, because I did read some of the FAQ before downloading:

Quote
I have a modem, can I use Folding@home? Yes. It can be configured to dial up automatically, or wait until you connect. There may be some problems with modems and the screen saver version. If you are experiencing any, please use the console version of Folding@Home

Quote
How do the results get back to you? Your computer will automatically upload the results to our server each time it finishes a work unit, and download a new job at that time. At this time, there may be problems if your computer is only connected to the Internet sporadically. We are working on better support for these cases. Only the console version currently works at all over a modem connection, and there still may occasionally be a few bugs with that.

I use a modem - I think its 56K - but AOL connects at 26K or so. I don't have any other internet options available to me.
I will dig around on the Stanford site and e-mail over the next few days and deal with the issue of this program.

Dial up modems aren't the only ones that exist...have you ever heard of DSL modems?
The problem with that instructions is that they're very vague. When they said "modem connection" it can mean a 56k modem, a ADSL modem, a cable modem, etc. And both instructions are contradicting themselves: The first one says "There may be some problems with modems and the screen saver version. If you are experiencing any, please use the console version of Folding@Home" and the second one says: "Only the console version currently works at all over a modem connection". They can be talking about different modem connections but since they never specify one can only guess, I believe.
But anyways, you should try the Graphical Client before e-mailing the Stanford site. Because even if you are able to make the console version work I don't think you'll like to see its status and activity through log files. Definitively, if you are not an experienced user you must use the graphical version.
