I don't know...
I do not look down on other manga fans for their tastes... although I certainly can't understand some of the yaoi fangirls that only read Yaoi... it's as disturbing as the people that only read hentai...
And I don't care about the popularity of a series to enjoy it or not. But the success of Oh! Great's totally plotless series even though they completely suck in all department except the fanservice gives me goosebumps.
I also usually refuse to have a conversation with someone about manga if all he knows is Naruto, bleach, one piece and DBZ (mind you, I also loved DBZ in the past)... But I'd usually try to give them a few good suggestion.
But I do refuse to watch poorly made anime adaptations. I just can't stand to watch all that butchering, it's like torture to me. But I don't refuse to watch all anime adaptations, some are really well done.

Well, in the end, maybe I am slightly elitist? well whatever... it's not like it really matters.

one piece isnt a generic shonen, Luffy doesnt go round beating the shit out of ppl who later become his friends. Its a light hearted action comedy epic, the fact that it doesnt deal with an important issue about the human mind or society, and deals with friendship and courage (well these are important issues but overly common) is what makes it a shonen rather than a seinen, much opposed to naruto whose author should have taken a leaf out of his brother's book and ended it a while ago.

I'm not an elitist I follow naruto bleach one piece and whatever other good piece of jap manga i can find eg riki-oh berserk qwan and many many others. I have more respect for non-japs who read even crappy manga than those who sit down and "enjoy" much of america's crap tv

Not really. I don't discriminate against series just because they're popular. I think that Bleach is pretty unoriginal and incredibly stereotypical, but I still read it. I rate and choose my series based on whether I think they're good or not, and don't think any less of those who disagree with me.

However, I do think less of those who only read the stuff that's in Shonen Jump (for example here) and refuse to read anything else, thinking that they know everything about manga and there's nothing else worth reading out there. They're just idiots though, it has nothing to do with being elitist in my opinion.

On One Piece: It's actually not about generic shonen fighting. Yes One Piece has fighting but it's not what drives the plot. Most shonen is a quest to take down some evil, for One Piece the primary conflict is the environment and it's unique in that regard.

On letting people enjoy their choices: No, **** that. If people like bad things you MUST give them **** for it, otherwise how will they learn? Most people are far to inept to realize they have bad taste and you need to nip their poor choices in the bud before they spread. Often the reason people like bad things is because that's all they know; if there is no one to tell them they like crap, that's all they'll ever know and that's all they'll spread to others. It is your moral responsibility to make sure people feel at least twice as bad as they should for liking the wrong things.

Anyone can like anything. If some likes killing people, as long as they don't do it, then they are not doing anything wrong. Liking something, and doing something are completely different things.

Now, were talking about manga here, something that people usually read in the comfort of their own solitude, and usually discuss things about it with people who read the same manga or close to it, (if they read manga at all.) I don't see how someone's manga choice gives way to moral discussion about bad choices. Manga is world ruled by opinion. Whoever delegates what a good decision and a bad decision is, is the individual that reads the manga.

Now if you want to get into some real moral discussion on choices, I think it would be wise to make a new topic.

Uh, don't get me wrong b/c I like One Piece, but it's whole set up is an idiot who's constantly hungry and goes around w/ his weird friends fighting "big" villain after "big" villain; that sounds pretty generic to me. I could breakdown the intricacies of Naruto and even Bleach if you asked me, but still the gist of both of them are pretty basic.

As for bad tastes, who says everything popular is bad? And what gives anyone the right to tell other people what they have to like? It's not like them reading Shonen Jump is hurting anyone, beside themselves that is.

I have to admit, while I generally don't read Shonen Jump titles, One Piece is still an enjoyable read. The difference between it and Bleach/Naruto? OP doesn't try to be a hardcore badass, it's just light action-comedy goodness.

Is anyone else like me and read pretty much everything they can find with more than 4 volumes translated?

4? I read just about anything with a semi-appealing summary that doesn't require jumping through too many hoops to get. So I read (and adore) popular stuff like Naruto and anything by CLAMP and also read lots of the obscure hyped manga and everything in between. I'll own up when something I read is awful, but I think some of the people who bash Naruto/Bleach/Jump are over exaggerating just a bit.

In my experience with shoujo/josei, (and I've read a couple of hundred) the popular titles tend to be the best of the lot-they're the ones interesting and/or innovative enough to stand out in the sea of titles with very similar plots and characters and not be utterly forgettable.

I totally don't think popular equals dreck-for the manga to get popular in the first place, it had to have some quality to make it appealing to enough people to stand out from the thousands of other titles on the market-and I really don't think that everyone else has bad taste and it's just the "enlightened ones" who don't.

While I dislike Naruto, Inuyasha and other random shounen series. I still enjoy Bleach, Death Note and others. Also, I don't mind popular series, either Shounen, Shoujo or any other demographic. So no, I'm not an elitist.

No, but far too many people think that disliking popular=being elitist (including some self-described elitists.)

Though really, how do you even measure?
Oh I read more obscure titles? Then what about classics? But most classics are also popular" and so on 'til everyone's annoyed with all posters involved.
