Since my first suggestion is actually done (habit of not scrolling down dead ).. and well, if this is something that's already done, then I'm gonna feel really stupid. dead
Anyways, my suggestion on finding manga...
I'm not sure if it's possible, but I've seen a few sites that do a summary search. Where you can enter a sentence or key phrase and it will find matching items. In this case, it'd be finding manga that, in it's summary, is similar to what had been entered. Since a lot of people look for a specific storyline.. well.. figure something like this would help.

Summary searches are already available. bigrazz For example, you type 'ghost' or twins', and it'll give you every manga that has 'ghost', 'twins' in its title (or one of its alternative titles) and every manga which summary includes those words.

Okay, you know how I was saying that I find series that I want to read based on the artwork, and having to click on each title to look at the picture for each is tedious, since most of the stuff I end up clicking on, I don't like the looks of? I think I may have come up with a solution that would actually work. It's better than my last idea about rating the artwork, at least.
How about a gallery view option? Where I'd be able to look at the picture for each series without having to click on it (like how it is in the "what's new" section, but for the whole "series info" list). Or maybe even a view where it's pictures only (like "view thumbnails only," you know?). Either would make things so much easier and quicker for me.

How about a thingy that takes all of your manga that you have enjoyed(8-9+ Ratings), and shows you similar manga? (Dunno how it would do this, but I've been on... 2 other sites (Movie ones), that do this, namely, Netflix.

That's pretty much what the recommendations section in the profile for each series is for. Only, you have to individually view each series that you want to see similar series recommended for, instead of them all being on one list, so it's a bit more work. The drawback (at this point in time, anyway) is that only the more generally popular series have recommendation listings, so if the manga you like are less popular, you can't use this feature, and you'll have to search for similar series manually. You can try doing summary searches, like Dr. Love said a few posts ago.

-It really helps to get recommendations from friends.
-I look up some series mae from an author I like.
-I read the "Similar Mangas" list, then pick one from there, then check out the ratings, summary and comments of it here on Manga Updates.
-When you read a manga, all the way at the back theres some advertisements of different mangas.

I make genre combinations at 'search by genre', look through scanlation teams' projects and sometimes users' lists (if they have rating on).
I have a small suggestion for search by genre. Is it possible to make it avaliable also for mangaka and scanlators search?

1) Looking for threads.
2) Search by genres.
3) Reading comments and reviews on series page.

It seems not many go by it this way but I do. I follow a certain routine: Lurk the I'm looking for threads, search for a series that has caught my eye and categorize it based on genres. I usually read the summaries of series before reading any comments, but summaries are never 100% accurate or detailed enough as we all know, and that's where the comments/reviews come in handy imo.

Some comments give a basic analysis on a series, while others just bash it. But I always read both sides since what one might hate others might like, and I may have overlooked certain points to a plot/character. Same goes for reviews. I find both features useful and many times have agreed with the comments made, and am highly thankful to the user.

So...maybe there can be a way to keep track of recent comments/reviews made by members? I don't usually select mangas by just randomly clicking I go by what's recommended, but if there was a way to see recent comments made (since old comments may differ from recent ones based on newer chapters) it might get others interested in different reads? =)

Filter releases - View release page - Click releases in their early chapters - Read description - Read comments - Move to lists

I would like to suggest an advanced search feature with the following features:

Series ID:
What:
-Enable selection of multiple series through their unique IDs (such as the series ID)

How(?):
-Series ID either entered into text box or possibly selected from a combo box. If the text/combo box provides an ID then show another text/combo box for additional series IDs (and so on).
-Search for each series ID and provide union of search results

Advantages:
-Enables users to create their own search query detailing a number of their own preferred series.
-This may greatly reduce the time required to perform searches for those visitors looking for releases from multiple series.

-Could be easily used to look for things such as related or recommended series.

Limitations/Disadvantages:
-Requires an advanced search page - additional coding.
-Combo boxes may prove to be too slow, having to load all series names and their IDs into the list
-May require length of search string/parameters to be adjusted (I'm unsure about this as I dont know how it is currently implemented)

Search for phrases in series title:
What:
-Enable selection of multiple series through searching within the series title for multiple phrases

How(?):
-Search phrase entered in text boxes. If the text box is not empty (after white space deletion) then show another texto box for additional search phrases.
-Search for each search phrase and provide union of search results

Advantages:
-As above
-Enables users who are unsure of an exact name to look for multiple phrases they believe may be within series title

Limitations/Disadvantages:
-Requires an advanced search page - additional coding.
-May need limitations on searches to prevent excessive load on servers from short phrases

Search for series with min-max releases:
What:
-Enable defining a minimum and/or maximum number of releases avaialble

How:
-Provide two text boxes, one for the user to determine the minimum number of releases that the series must have, the other to determine the maximum number of releases the series can have

Advantages:
-Enables uesrs to look for series of specific lengths (such as one-shots, short series, long series etc) depending on their reading preferences.

Disadvantages:
-Requires an advanced search page - additional coding.
-Requires ability to quickly determine number of releases per series (possibly already available)

It would be nice to be able to make thematic lists. I know there are a lot of categories like 'historical' already, but what if I want to just look for manga set in one particular historical period? Or recommend them to others? That type of feature on Amazon often helps me find related things when a "Users who liked..." feature doesn't.

Ok well there's something at least towards that goal.. I added a "likes" thing to the member info page for people with public lists. It will show their 3 top favorite genres... I don't even know if it will be useful or not

2 suggestions:

1) It would be cool if I could sort other peoples public lists by ranking so I can get ideas for which manga suggestions (especially useful if a person has 1000 items on their completion list!) -- having sorted by name isn't useful at all unless their list is short

(...I can't find a link in my User CP that directs me to my profile page... so I end up clicking on my name in the forum)

2) For the profile page:
I would love to see more than 3 of my favorite genres: I think a plain break down of how you have it now, but a list of all the genres, would be useful and self-informative.

"Drama (65) Seinen (63) Action (52)"

Sometime back I just didn't realize most of the manga I read had the Drama tag in it, and so I didn't look for such manga in genre searches, but since then knowing this has helped me find manga more that I like through adv genre searches -- knowing more about my preferences like this would still help me tailor my searches smile

What helps me find new good manga is the review for it and picture as well as what offer users have to say about it who have read it.
Then look at genra and see if matches what I like and if looks good to me give it a try and hoe for the best.

When I look for new manga to read I often use the advanced search feature. I find the genre I'm interested in reading atm and search for completely scanlated series that aren't in any of my lists. Then I look through the results via general rating and add them to my wishlist.

One thing that would be nice in this feature, though: if one could search for series' length, for example "search for series that are longer than 5 volumes" ... Or if you could click both "search for completely scanlated projects" and "exclude oneshots" when searching, instead of only having the option of selecting one specification in extended options, type and list options.

Other than that I really like the feature where you can moderate the releases section according to your taste. I often look the releases through and add series to my wishlist, because I've already excluded some genres that I don't like, and colored some that I mainly prefer. That feature is nice.
