I think a lot of people are confusing popularity with being overrated... or maybe they're the same thing?

Most popular manga are usually popular because they appeal to a wider range of audience. As for which ones are overrated, well, I don't know. I don't really like judging what others like.

uh, Claymore manga has no plot? either you're not too far into the manga or was too drawn by the battle and gore to not notice that the plot build up.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
Oh what a plot twist - The organization which creates claymores is evil !! ..seriously, like we couldn't see that from chapter 1. And the whole thing that yoma are produced withing organisation ? 80% people I met at many manga forums predicted that scenario. Plot twists ? We have Clare which sucks and gradually she meets stronger enemies and she herself becomes stronger.

The plot in Claymore exists only to explain why main heroines are fighting new kick-ass enemy.

But even so, I still read it, because as I said - I never expected Claymore to become intelectual with sudden and amazing plot twists, so I don't think it's overrated. It was honest from beginning what kind of manga it was and either you want to read it or not.

No, those are not the same things but they aren't completely seperate from each other. Since what is overrated ? Overrated are mangas which gain high notes despite the fact that they are crappy. And which mangas get high notes - those popular ones.

Naruto, Bleach and others are considered now "Overrated" by many, but they were really interesting Mangas at beginning. I believe the fact that they are not so great in eyes of many it's because they were popular and remain to be popular - I might go all "Bleeeh, Bleach sucks now" but I didn't stop reading it, since I liked the first Bleach and I hope to see some conclusion one day, even thought maybe it should reach it now for sake of being better.

I don't know if I hit a genre but :
Fruit Basket
Good Morning Call
His and Her circumstances.

I don't read much but all of them I found really interesting at beginning and then the development became somehow forced - like they were just adding problems to become even farther from conclusion. It's an idea that keeps the famous soap opera "Bold and Beautiful" forever going, but is it really a good idea ?

Fruits Basket is the longest of those three, & it's complete at 23 volumes; kind of long I guess but not compared to something like One Piece or Naruto. Hana Yori Dango did go on for a looong time though, come to think of it.

I don't think they have to be "crappy" to be overrated, just not as good as the hype and rabid fans would have us all believe.

Yeah as I stated before, what I consider overrated are manga in which nearly all their fan base, large or small, all rave about how this manga is so "new and fresh" or how it's the epitome of the genre.

I would put Sekirei on my list. As much as I like it, why does everyone pretend it has a good plot when it's just some out of the blue made up crap to explain why these hot girls want to hang out w/ some Average Joe; and also simply to distract the reader from the massive amounts of fan service.

Another one I would add is Rosario + Vampire. Everyone goes on and on about how much the anime sucked, and I think to myself that the manga is only a few notches better.

Vampire Knight - I am fucking sick and tired of seeing vampire knight avatars and signatures wherever the fuck I go. "KANAME X YUKI" or "ZERO X YUKI"

FANGIRLS, GET A FUCKING GRIP.
Even I'M not that big of a freak with Hana-fucking-Kimi.

Special A is enjoyable, but srsly, I couldn't care less about it anymore. I know who everyone's gonna end up with by now. -_-; WANT NAMES? This series is enjoyable, but not OMGWTFMUSTDIE4IT

Naruto and Bleach... URGH

SAMEWITH GIRL GOT GAME. HANA-KIMI RIPOFF FTL =[

Sano FTW yo~

Vampire Knight is the "obvious" one ^^. I was used to have great interest in InuYasha before, but as the manga goes on, I hate his indecisive attitude in love. I mean, come on, he's "smitten" with TWO girls at once throughout most of the series (I don't know what happens in the end - too angry to continue ><)!!!

I actually like Vampire Knight, but I absolutely hate Naruto!

same here! also Inuyasha, it's was kinda interesting at first but then it gets boring...after 500+ chapters he still hasn't even confessed to Kagome, that's plain sad
Hana Yori Dango- no need to explain
Gakuen Alice, I haven't read it, but what's so great about it? hmmm....the art is seems pretty average

Once again, it is possible to like an overrated manga.

Bleach is overrated. I still enjoy it thoroughly.

I don't really think that Dragon Ball is overrated. It established so many staples of shonen manga that the current titles would be completely different.

I think it was summed by best by Criminal Intent:

At this point in the thread, I think it's pretty well established. An overrated manga is one that can be totally enjoyable, but its fans blow it so out of proportion that it gets ridiculous. It can still be an interesting series, though. I'm with you on the Bleach, and many of the overrated manga in here are all interesting... to a point at least. I think it's less about enjoying it or not and more about the reactions of the fans who read nothing else yet are convinced they know everything about manga, and the series they're talking about it the most original, best manga EVER, when it's just not.

Finally, Girl Got Game. So many people love it, but I just think it's a really, really bad copy of Hana-Kimi that's even less plausible.

Same wavelength much? I totally agree, thank you so much for mentioning it! Do you have any idea how many arguments I've had with stupid people who won't read Hana-Kimi because "It's too long~~" but insist that Girl Got Game is "like, omg, the best manga ever!! despite the fact that it sucks"? Too many. Far, far too many.

The best manga have the smallest target audience, therefor it is impossible for something to be overrated.

Total BS-I've read a couple of the more obscure works/classics/etc. and some of it has the tendency to get so wrapped up in it's philosophical/political/psychological ('cause face it, those are the types that get the real hype-not shounen friendship tales) overtones that the story gets completely lost in the process.

I'll throw in a vote for Kare Kano- I liked it just fine, but it's not OMG deep. Neither is NANA, nor Vampire Knight, nor Akuma de Sourou nor half a dozen of the title's usually rec'd when someone asks for deep/psychological/etc. (I adore all these titles, but there are more intelligent ones floating around.)

YamaNade/PGE and Ouran are two of my faves, but yeah-they're really not all that innovative, have lots of problems with plot, pacing and characterization and art that's at best haphazard.

I feel kinda sad... most series I love are on the overrated list XD
I kinda thought girl got game was funny...(even though it resembled hanakimi way too much to be coincidental) I liked the way she hit a stone in half with her head....
The ones I like to add are:

Absolute boyfriend(absolutly overrated)
Sailor moon ( but that just might be because I dont like magic girls XD)

well the rest that I thought were overrated are already there so I wont bother mentioning anymore XD
