I'm not too sure. A lot of series have drawn a tear from me ... often they can reflect too intense emotion other than sadness -- I get too tied up in stories (in the past 10 years, every time I played through Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger, I cried).

I guess I'm writing to express solidarity with some of the people who picked scenes that they thought were completely lame because I was pretty shaken by some of those scenes too (e.g., in Naruto or OP).

The only scene/set of scenes that I can remember reacting to with some sadness (there were a lot of other emotions there as well -- like, "ah, that is really cute") was
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Naru being deserted by everyone at the end of the main storyline, though the flashback of childhood made it an emotional scene for me
in LH, though I'm almost certain A LOT of other stories have made me feel sadder, but can't recall them at the moment.

Gah, anything where one of the lovers dies, I find heartbreaking.

They're all usually labeled with "Tragedy." =)

The OVA Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal.

Endings of:
Chrno Crusade
Code Geass R2
Ai no Kusabi OVA

And i think it was episode 23 of Casshern Sins. ;_;

I know its an anime, but that scene in Saint Seiya Sanctuary when the two Athena exclamation collide:

Ioga: "Master Camus... Watever they say, I dont believe you joined Hades..."

Shiryu: "I agree Shura. You, the excalibur protector, Athena´s faithful saint... They are wrong!"

I dont remember Shun, sorry.

Seiya: "Mu, Milo Aioria. I know your position as Gold Saints, but we cant allow this... we all are Atena saints!"

That scene always break my heart. Hurt your friends, your brothers, in name of an ideal cry

1) Ending of Pita-ten
2) Ending of Absolute Boyfriend
3) I can't remember the title... But it believe it was a oneshot in Beauty is the Beast, (or something)

Spoiler (highlight to view)
There was a black plague during this time which kills dozens of people at a time and it was continuous, repeating every so often. There were also cows who had human DNA transplanted into them (which is very undramatic in words) and were basically - real humans. Humans did this so they could preserve beef and some cows enjoy giving their lives to give people happiness, while one boy-cow (main character?) rebelled, because after his father told him that he enjoyed nothing more than to see people enjoy beef, he was served to the son of their owners. The boy bumps into the son, and they become best friends and the son stops eating beef. One day, the black plague strikes the son and at this time, a disease also passed through the cows, wiping them all out except the boy because he lived indoors with the son. The best thing to cure the black plague however, was cow liver. They kept it a secret about the ordeal, but the son finds out because there was a corroded key in his *purchased through the black market* cow liver that the boy ate a long time ago while they were playing around

eek eh? I just had to add it laugh it might give me a chance to see if anyone knows the series without posting up a new topic. biggrin biggrin biggrin

I agree with Zettai Kareshi and FMA, but I would like to add Haou Airen.
The church scene was terribly unexpected, for me anyway (didn't realize it was a tragedy until after the fact >.<)

I agree with some that have been posted already... I didn't read all the posts so I might be repeating this but one I remember right now is the ending of Tista. The last few pages really got to me.

Spoiler (highlight to view)
When Arty went to visit her and the school at the end.

Actually it's from X-Day Of Setona Muzushiro called The Last supper. It made me cry, too.

As for me, there are many 'favorite' heartbreaking moments in manga. I have such a bad memory that I can't list all of them here biggrin. I cried EVERY TIME I read the scene when Chouji in Naruto was knocked down and almost died. Then came the moving flashback and the butterfly. I thought he would never appear again, however he survived!!! Maybe fans made Masashi do so laugh .
And the death of Ageha in Basara (sorry can't use URL) no, he's my all time favorite character I can't help crying accepting he's really gone.He did so many things for people around but couldn't get a happy ending for himself. Poor Ageha. And the chapters called " Don't cry with the moon" in Koucha no Ouji, the scenes where the main character disappear in Hotaru no mori (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=3295) and Kon no Ki Konoha (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=28924) (they're almost the same) , the one-shot White cloud (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=6993) ..... sad
