They can reduce the overall cost by commissioning us (scanlation groups) to do the jobs for them. Let us have the raws, work (translating + editing) on them, and then they can print and distribute, AND SELL. >.> We're not working for money. Hell, we don't get anything off scanlating. But we're still better than them in so many ways.

I heard DMP was considering something like this a few weeks (month?) back. I don't really know any details though—just that the comment threads I saw had a lot of discussion from scanlators who were upset that a legit company might want to use their work for legit sales and not pay them the same rates it normally pays employees/freelancers(?—I may be simplifying their views here). But I know that each individual person working on scans has his or her own thoughts and motivations, so I can believe there are more like you who want to make such a setup work. Whatever it is the various publishers are working on, I imagine we'll keep hearing about more new developments with online manga distribution in future months.
