This week's fun little poll was from F_J. If I showed you a random volume of manga, could you determine the demographic and/or genre of the series?

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Your favorite author has been charged and/or convicted of a serious crime (murder, rape, child prostitution, etc). Would you treat their fictional works any differently?
Choices:
Make no difference, so I don't care - votes: 2318 (43.8%)
All works past, present, and future has been tainted - votes: 1247 (23.5%)
Anything new they work on is tainted - votes: 442 (8.3%)
Only works that are related to the crime are tainted (i.e., plot point about rape) - votes: 1289 (24.3%)
There were 5296 total votes.
The poll ended: December 16th 2017

I had to go 50/50 due to the demographic being thrown in too. They are an utter mess to figure out without looking them up.

Most of the time. Demographic is the bane here.

Most of the time.

Part because a lot of genres have specific art, and also because the cover is made for seduce on factors mentioned.
But I have to say some manga surprise me.

Most of the time. It's the seinen that get me. Some of them are just to ambiguous.

50/50

Shoujo manga is pretty easy to spot, but josei is slightly more difficult since there's overlap with shoujo and seinen at times. Distinguishing between shounen and seinen manga can be tricky.

Genre... depends.

Guessing just one is easy. Comedy is pretty easy to spot as they almost always look goofy/simplistic. Action is also easy to spot if the characters are in some sort of fighting pose or holding a weapon or wearing armor. Fantasy is easy to spot due to clothes. Horror is easy to spot because they always look dark or grim.

The tricky part is guessing the exact mix. Is it school life action or an action adventure where the MC just happens to wear his uniform all the time? Is it an action harem manga or just a harem rom-com with fantasy elements? Horror mystery or just plain horror?

I don't know about just the title, but with a picture or two, sure, I can also tell the year it was made. With anime I can even tell the number of episodes based on a few screenshots.

Demographics are not that hard, pinpointing the year is tougher and I sometimes miss by a couple of years.

Dreamaway's summary is the criteria I use exactly. And shoujo manga is easy to spot cuz there's usually a handsome guy in the picture somewhere, and if you can see his body, he's very skinny and tall.
