I've tagged Reread the prev...... this time but usually it only takes a few pages of the last chapter for me to remember.
I would have also had find out why it was in hiatus (dropped, caught up with, scanlation team disbanded, etc) in there as that's usually what I do if it's over six months unless that's the normal for that series.

I selected 'read it right away'
given that it's already something that I like I wouldn't wait. fandom > everything else
I do generally prefer the series to be finished or be almost there before starting; for example I haven't seen an episode of game of thrones yet.

Answered "decent chunk", but in effect it is "hold off until it is finished" - if I stop reading a story for any reason, I only come back much later, usually when I learn that it is completed.

I'm one of those people who usually start a manga only if it's completed and fully scanlated. I'll tell you my reasons for doing that (but keep in mind that other people might have other motives):
1. I'm a binge-reader and I like to read manga and novels in one go with the flood of emotions and suspance building up throughout the reading session (I can't get carried away that much if I only read one chapter at a time);
2. in general, I like focusing on one story at a time;
3. to avoid hiatuses, uncompleted or abandoned series and other similar unpleasant circumstances;
4. I don't mind about trends and popularity that much. I don't share my opinions on forums and such anyway (apart from some cases), so I don't find it a handicap. If anything, I think it's an advantage since by the time the series is completed, there will be a lot of reviews and I will know if a series is worth reading or not.

Well, these are my reasons for focusing on completed series. It's only natural to have different opinions and tastes. Me too, I don't understand people who read ongoing series and wait for months for every chapter, but I don't judge them because we are all different and that's okay. I hope you could understand my attitude a little more biggrin

Quote from HikaruYami
I super don't understand the people here saying they don't start a manga until it's totally finished and scanlated. Like... are you trying to be totally ignorant to popular culture?

What in the world does "popular culture" have to do with reading a story? As the poll is quite obviously asking about actual stories.........as in not some sort of gag manga where the chapters can stand alone, this is about something we might have to go back on to refresh our memory about where the story is at.........it would seem like a total no-brainer that, you know, anybody and everybody, would be concerned with if they were ever going to get to read the freaking ending of the story.

Popular culture? Public consciousness? Those kinds of things are considerations for you when you're reading for pleasure in this context? O_o

I've done all of these except "Drop". Most of the time I'll wait until a few more chapters come out (which is what I selected). I'll also usually read at least the last few chapters or last volume. If it's been a long time, and chances are there have been other chapters that came out in the meantime that I didn't read, and it's something I really liked, I'll start over.

Generally I don't start series until they're finished, but sometimes I'm interested enough to start an unfinished series. In that case I'd read the completed chapters and then probably wait to read the rest until the story is done, starting from the beginning.

Re: the pop culture comment... I can see the relevancy for someone living in Japan or someone who participates a lot in online discussions/is otherwise part of a community relating to discussion of anime/manga. Personally I read manga for my own entertainment and it doesn't matter to me whether I'm reading it at the same time as other people.

I'm either reread for refresher or drop the series. If it a series that I truly enjoy it's the former and if something I read casually (usually those that I don't even know they went on hiatus) it's the latter.

If no one is interested in discussing the cool things happening in the manga I'm reading right now, then yeah, that makes it a less interesting experience for me. Will I still sometimes go back and read classics I missed, like Hokuto no Ken and Black Jack? Sure. Am I going to go back and read Kochi Kame now? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahah no.

I have read a lot of "Manga" which are on hiatus now. I canĀ“t really understand why they are, but if there would be an update, i would read it immediately. Mostly i remember them crystal clear, if i stuggle i reread the last chapter ?
I check them often x.x
