Actually, modern Japanese is read left to right when written horizontally, and !? is always horizontal even when the text is vertical -- it occupies the space of one character. But you know that. smile

?! just looks better to me, but as long as I understand the meaning I suppose either is fine.

Yeah, I think this way as well. "?!". I always think of the sentence that preceeds these marks as an "Exclamative interrogation", rather than an "Interrogative exclamation".

Personally, I use "?!", but it doesn't bother me much when I see people using "!?".

"?!" is the standard in English, all kinds of English (and not only English) literature and stuff uses "?!". It's a choice based on punctuation hierarchy. Of course, there are exceptions since it's not a "hard rule", but big publishers and editors will always choose "?!". This is also the case with Western manga publishers.

"!?" is Japanese standard though, well, it's perfectly fitting for weaboos.
