From residentgrigo, again. This poll may be strange for many of you, but please look up TEZUKA Osamu. He's known as the god, father, or godfather of manga. He's essentially the Japanese version of Walt Disney. You ever hear about Astro Boy? This poll was inspired by our recent Stan Lee poll.

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Voting in elections
Choices:
There are no elections in my country - votes: 145 (3.4%)
I will when I become old enough or become a citizen - votes: 427 (10.1%)
I've never voted and likely never will - votes: 552 (13.1%)
I used to vote - votes: 111 (2.6%)
I vote sometimes - votes: 651 (15.5%)
I voted exactly once - votes: 307 (7.3%)
I regularly vote - votes: 2019 (47.9%)
There were 4212 total votes.
The poll ended: December 15th 2018

I'm actually quite proud of you all! Almost a majority of you vote!

The majority of the responses indicating they've never heard of him is a little disappointing since he was the father of manga, but maybe I'm just showing my age.

I'm so happy that someone thought to include the I like exactly one of his creations option, because that's my pick. I really liked MW, but while I tried several of his other series, I couldn't get past the old-fashioned melodrama-cum-poetic justice, the boring romance with weak female leads and the god-awful art style.

I can't figure out why or how MW is different, because it had all of those features, but I reckon since Tezuka Osamu obviously stepped out of his comfort zone while writing it he actually accomplished something there.

I never really clearly read one of his work, but at least I really appreciate his huge contribution to the manga world mmm...
A bit sad that many people actually don't know who Osamu Tezuka is, which can probably called as the father of modern manga mmm...

How the fuck "Who?" is the most voted option? It may sound a little elitist from me but I'm really surprised that there are people out there who like manga that never heard about his name or don't care at all.

I'm a big fan and he's one of my favorite mangaka. His body of work is so rich that there are works for literally every type of person and most of them aged like fine wine. It would be good for people to read older stuff sometimes. They're missing some great stories they could actually enjoy a lot.

40% answering Who? really disappoints me.

I saw his work Dororo was in the next anime season and decided to finally read it as my second Tezuka experience.
I loved it.
I also loved his take on Buddhism in Buddha BUT I am also a native buddhist and couldn't stand the inaccuracy so I didn't finish it.
Also according to my brother, we'd seen Astro boy when we were babies.
So I can't say Exactly one can I?

I vote
I like some of his work

So far, I've enjoy his works that I've read. Currently going through Black Jack at the moment.

Aside from Astro Boy (With the film that came out almost a decade ago), has the guy really ever seen any publicity in the West? In fact, most anime fans don't know about much of anything that came out prior to the 90's (With the exception of, perhaps, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross The First due to it's integration into Robotech, the series Voltron used, Transformers, and Dragon Ball), and you'd be stunned by their ignorance when asking them about such as City Hunter, or Urusei Yatsura, or Cutey Honey (One of the earliest "magical girl" series), or Cobra, or Skull Man (The inspiration for Kamen Rider), or 3x3 Eyes, and so forth. Heck, even with more "recent" series, how many people know that You're Under Arrest!, Slayers, and Oldboy were all based off of a manga (Or novel in Slayers (Novel)'s case)?

I knew that "Who" would go far but not that far... Yet it makes sense. This site would need to repeat the age poll to be sure but the community's age can´t be much over 20 on average. Meaning that Tezuka was dead for 2 decades before most here started with manga/anime.
Atom - The Beginning got a filler-tastic anime recently, Black Jack - Aoki Mirai is too short/not completely translated to bring in new fans and Pluto finished a near decade ago too. Meaning that even the recent-ish adaptation that stood out are equally too old to attract the teens and twens of today. The Pluto anime of 2020 better be good is all I am saying.

I am a big fan, of course. Hi no Tori is the 2nd greatest manga of all time with Buddha equally being in my manga top 10. The best anime adaptations of his work are the 80s Hi no Tori OVAs, the 90s Black Jack OVAs and the Hidamari no Ki tv anime. Pluto and Atom - The Beginning are the best "remake" manga.
Start with those but don´t worry. The is still a LOT of worthy Tezuka output beneath the tip of the quality iceberg.

maybe it's a generational thing where no one looks at artwork that is more than 10 years old.
in the same way Stan Lee was a creator for so many years TO made stuff for almost 45 years
he's made so much stuff it's a wonder anyone can see it all, I'd not heard of the MW calstine mentioned
he had gender swap as a MC trait in 1950~
I liked Black Jack; 1973 it had the attention to detail for medical miscellany that people could appreciate, unlike those medical dramas we've seen even ten years ago where they shock flatlined patients.
this goes without saying the triumph it is to produce such high quality and variable artworks a few months after your home and country are melted down.

I hadn't heard of him. Pluto has been on my to-read list for awhile but I hadn't noticed it was a collaboration by Naoki Urasawa + other writers.

I like how majority of the commentors are upset that the majority of the voters don't know who Osamu Tezuka, the father of manga, is.

Honestly, the works are hallmarks for their time, but I don't think many would enjoy them in the present.

To be honest I'm utterly shocked that 43% chose "Who?". I thought 15-25% at most.
I'd expect this at MAL, but not here. I'm actually a little disgusted.

Same at being "a little disgusted".

I would imagine most of those "Who?" answers actually have heard of Mighty Atom ("Astro Boy" in the US). The Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize is still a major award in manga though.... (the original "tezuka award" was sadly retired)
