This week's poll was suggested by Nekomikoto. This one hits close to home actually, as many years ago I helped scanlate Mahou Sensei Negima! with AquaStar Fansubs. There's a character that we called "Colonel Sanders," although the official translation came out to be "Ku:nel Sanders."

Then it wasn't good enough. Should just have dropped it.

Spell their own way and leave a note explaining the change. Notes are good.

Spell their own way and leave a note explaining the change, because it's never too late to correct mistakes, but clarification is good.

I'm actually surprised most people don't mind. I tend to use the same names and terminology as the previous group so people wouldn't have to learn new ones. (guess I'm too OCD about consistency)
I thought I was the one who submitted this question 🤣

I mean, while I'll probably be pissed anyway if it was a character name, if they aren't correcting a mistake, they wouldn't be changing it, right? Things like changing Androssi to Endorsi inTOG in the official translation is annoying, but I can live with it (granted, now I have to look up the name, because I can't remember which one is the one being used now...)
Though sometimes I see people translating names (mostly of places) as one thing in one chapter and as another in another, even though in the story they were refering to the same thing, so I'm not sure if it's that they are correcting a mistake or just too goddamn lazy to even read the previous chapters or keep a tab on the terminology they themselves use, so they are just winging it chapter by chapter.

There's no need for me to explain my vote because it's the overwhelming majority (74.5% as of now)
But as for the "official translation" of Negima, lambchopsil, I'm pretty sure they just wanted to avoid lawsuits.

Isn't that the same reason why the "official" translations of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure are so terrible, as well? They want to avoid any potential lawsuits, and, therefore, destroy a lot of the symbolism and references that the creator made as a HUGE part of the series?
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
And, on top of that, show why piracy is the only answer to escape legal bull like this.
That being said, Japan's copyright system is much different from that of the Wests. Just look at the changes made to games like Snatcher and Metal Gear 2
