This week's poll was suggested by F_J. You ever encounter scanlations where the chapters aren't done in publication order? Maybe they skip around from chapter 4 to 9 to 6. Or maybe chapters 1-25 are done, and then suddenly another group starts at chapter 71.

You can submit poll ideas here
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Your optimal manga chapter length?
Choices:
About 18 pages (standard weekly series) - votes: 225 (6.7%)
Maybe 25 pages~ - votes: 700 (20.8%)
Around 35 pages. - votes: 703 (20.9%)
Circa 45 pages? - votes: 279 (8.3%)
Whooping 55+ pages! - votes: 344 (10.2%)
I really don't care... - votes: 1109 (33%)
There were 3360 total votes.
The poll ended: February 29th 2020

Compared to 12 years ago, looks like more people prefer between 25-35 pages rather than something longer.

An easy choice this time: hate it. I mean, I rarely read series as they're scanlated (except gag/pure comedy, strictly episodic series, and certain slice-of-life manga), and this still annoys the hell out of me. I can only imagine what people who were following the series chapter-by-chapter must feel 😕

If it's an anthology or something similar, that's fine. Otherwise, it sucks. But this only really happens when a project gets sniped I think.

Not a good idea, but I'll wait around for someone to fill the gap... Better than no scanlations at all for years... And i suppose in case of some gag mangas it doesn't even matter that much, because they don't have consistent plot from chapter to chapter

Like others have said, it depends on the series.
Gag manga typically don't have a running plot so it doesn't make too much of a difference, but even with those, there could potentially be character development that you'd miss out on... or new characters introduced in certain chapters that may get skipped over (I'm lookin' at you, Kochikame).

Hate it. Regardless of the question if the series has tight plotting or not. See what this did to Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei.

There is only one way a gap, exactly one gap, can work: Scanlating from the point the anime stopped but the anime would need to have been a direct adaptation and I would still scanlate at least the first chapter to entice people who weren´t exposed to the anime to watch it and then come back after the "jump".

Jumping through anthologies (with many authors) makes sense though. The one exception to the rule.

The only times I've seen this work well are anthologies, though I've met a few series where this wouldn't be necessarily a bad idea if done as a competent, deliberate abridgement of a completed series because the series had points where you had stretches of low-quality & pointless filler...both to control staff attrition so you can get through the story and to make it easier for readers to get into the story. (Let's be honest, even KHR's fans will probably agree that the first arc should have ended sooner..and only a tiny portion of it is relevant to anything later.)

I do think it'd be best to eventually do the skipped chapters later, and leave a guide listing what to skip if you can't slog through those stretches, but...abridged is better than dropped, when the story's interesting when the manga gets around to it.

It might also work out well with some of the long AF gag continuity-free series to have a scanlator-assembled anthology. Notes about selection and what might be relevant if anything when skipping around would definitely be appreciated, even when the it's a blissfully continuity-free story from end to end. (And I would not consider Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei an example of a blissfully continuity-free story.)

HATE it! No exceptions!
Including, and just as seriously, when it's done when there is an anime adaptation, to skip to where the anime ends.

I don't really think that anthologies (with no connection, whatsoever, between the stories) are an exception, so much as the issue not being applicable to them.

Some of the anthologies I've read have been homages to a series, and others have had couple-chapter series included as well as one-shots. But yeah, I wouldn't really say order applies as long as the connected stories are in order.

And, honestly, I mostly hate it because usually the skipping around isn't done well--it takes skill to abridge something well, and you have to pick something that will benefit. I've only once in decades of reading manga come across a scanlation group that succeeded at both.

The "(with no connection, whatsoever, between the stories)" was there to clarify that my statement about anthologies is only true, as long as there is no connection of any kind.
If there is some connection, however, then any translation has to be in its proper order.

As much as I hate it (I'm sure most of us do), I realized that scanlators are doing it for free for readers like me who also reading the manga for free, too.

So, I choose the "Oh, Well.."

Of course, I'm more satisfied if this doesn't happent though.. 😅

I hate skipping in general, but I ESPECIALLY hate it now that I use this site. Because as long as the scanlation group is recognized, then suddenly I'll continuously have a notification that a manga I read is up to chapter 238 just because some rando group translated chapter 238, when the rest of the series is left at 50. And now I have no idea if the series is actually updated unless I manually click and see the individual scanlation group notifications or I check on it on a particular site. If I could manually vote to not have certain groups' updates not appear on my lists, I would do so for this reason. Why would anyone want to skip to read the final chapter if no one's translated everything in-between? Who is this for? Whyyyyyyyyyy?
