Anyways, for this week, do you have any opinions on scanlation groups that release only the prologue or first chapter of a series, and then either they drop the project or never release another chapter for months? Perhaps the group is slow. Or maybe it was just to bring awareness to the series and have another group pick it up.

I don't mind this, really.
If it brings more exposure to the series, then that's good at the very least. Might help publishers see if a series is worth licensing or not.
I also understand that people have personal lives and might not have as much free time as they'd like, and it's not like I'm paying for any of these releases, so I don't feel like I have a right to complain about how they're spending their time.

Reminds me of chapterone, "where every project is a dropped project." Are there any groups doing this intentionally nowadays, or is it just from new groups biting off more than they can chew?

It's alright. At least something made it out there. Someone else can then stumble over it and pick up the pieces.

I'd rather it be that than nothing. Sometimes you have to wait for months, or even a few years, but eventually somebody (probably) picks it up. I've got 5 manga like that sitting in my reading list right now, but used to have more.

Totally fine, they do it for free after all. No obligations. As people said, it gives a series some exposure so other groups might pick it up. Happened to the title I scanlated the first 3 chapters of as well.

I usually try to avoid stuff like this but eh, what can you do.

Though it would be nice in these situations to get a small info about about it. If you only intend to do it for exposure, out it in your translators notes or something.

I have this one manga I've been waiting for over a year now (I Can See That She's Especially Cute) and that's an absolute oddball of happening... Seemed to have been dropped immediately, status stills seems to be 1 volume and ongoing (weird after a long time), the mangaupdate entry is barely linked anywhere and the name is different in various places too...

So yeah... Imo the worst thing about stuff like this (honestly like the poll last time) is the uncertainty. Do you know what's gonna happen when chapters are skipped? Or people stop after 1 chapter? Or when there are unexplained sudded breaks?

Depends. Are they doing it to "stake a claim" on a project and snarl at other groups when they try to pick it up, while being perfectly content with leaving readers (and other scanlators) hanging for years? If so, I hate it. If not: "Not a good idea, but oh well."

I see it as giving the manga some exposure.
If they translate one chapter and stop for more than 3-4 months, imo, it's fair game, if someone comes and starts translating it. If the group complains, I'd say it's their own fault.

So in my eyes, it's alright to translate one chapter and do nothing afterwards.

This. It's even better if scanlators immediately tell if it's just one chapter from them for the sake of exposure. If it's good, someone will pick it up.

I mean it adds exposure to the series so nothing wrong mmm...

The problem is when other groups see it as 'They may pick it up again someday' and so nobody ever takes it for a long time.

This is just my opinion...

Don't do it with any new series until y'all go back and finish up the multitudes of neglected or forgotten & sad mangas that get little to no attention that you started back in 2010...

Sure, new manga is exciting but if you have leftovers on your plate,it's time to clear them up!

Every new Chapter you fix (even if it's just a prologue or intro) takes time away from the series that you already have in the works.

Refuse any new requests to finish abandoned projects too. Your fans will understand.

If you have time, update your scan group manga ads. Make them shorter... it's less to load.

Hate it ...but if they start the manga, but then can't continue, or go off it, I can understand that. (still hate it)
If it's just a chapter, to give people a taste of what the manga is like, to see if there is interest among readers and/or to any scanlators get interested in taking it on...

Exactly.. I have found some shojo manga during my browsing that only have one chapter, and haven't been continued for 10 years or more. And that's why I choose "I hate it". 😅
