I'm a pen user mostly out of preference and the fact that in my line of work, pens are a necessity.

I much prefer a pencil, 'cause it's erasable (I like erasing~) and 'cause you can get a wide variety of darkness and thickness of the line very easily by varying the pressure. I like mechanical pencils the best (I call them pushy-pencils) because the lead is always a specific width (and you can pick the width you want, like .5 or .7 mm), so they never get dull and you don't have to waste time sharpening. It's really nice because I write very small, and when a regular pencil gets too dull, I can't write as small as I want.
Anyway I do use pens for some stuff, because they are permanent and they don't rub off or smear once they dry. But I'd almost always rather use a pencil first, and then write over it with pen and erase the pencil. It's because once I've written stuff, I often want to change it later and so with pen I have to cross out lots of stuff and it that wastes space and makes it look like I make a bajillion mistakes all the time.
But there are some really nice fancy pens out there, I like to use them just for fun sometimes.

pen, pencil and rapidogaph
I always use pen, even for math. Everyone finds that strange but it's what I'm most comfortable with, plus our exams you have to do in pen so I was totally prepared since I'm so used to it, people were finding it so awkward. The only time I use a pencil is for Scantron Cards, even graphs I use pen when I can.
